Here's a short MMA fight that I shot with the HMC150 last weekend in Arlington, TX featuring martial artist and ex-"Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" actor Jason David Frank. The fight was shot using a monopod close to ringside, hence the not-so-steady camerawork:

I shot this in 720p60 (PH mode) with the shutter speed set at 1/60. Edited in 720p30 in Final Cut Pro 6 using the Apple ProRes 422 video codec, with slow-motion footage conformed using Cinema Tools. I then exported to QuickTime (H.264) format at 10 mbps for upload to YouTube.

This was one of my first experiences shooting something combat sports-related, so if you guys have any advice on how I can do mo' bettah in the future ("Use a tripod!"), I would greatly appreciate it.

You would get better results if you get right up next to the ring. Like they shoot it on TV. Although on TV they have stands and shoot over the ring down a lot of the time.

When you are far back the viewer focusses on the fence as much as the fighters.

They will let you get up close unless the event is a televised event and you might be in the way of the TV cameramen.

People who do this stuff want cameras around and are used to seeing them close to the fighters. So just walk up and shoot your fight(s)!
