Mixed lighting frustrations

I have always had some problems white balancing my DVX100A in mixed lighting situations. Ideally, when given the time, I either color correct daylight for tungsten, or the reverse and all is good.
However, when there is no time for CTO or CTB, I seem to either end up with extra cold or extra warm video. I am accustomed to (with full size cameras) cheating a white balance card toward one source or the other to achieve an acceptable white balance, but with the DVX this doesn't really seem to work. I've tried adjusting scene files, etc but footage seems, again, to be extremely orange or blue.
What am I missing? I have searched this topic, but to no avail.
Thanks for any help.

Short of doing proper color correction, I hope the answer for me will be the use of warm cards. But the myriad different mixed lighting situations still present challanges without a reference and testing. I recently bought the Minolta Color Meter II (used, it does 90% of what the III does at 1/3 the price) and a set of warm cards in the hope that, at some point on the cold side at least, the use of the warm cards will become intuitive based on feedback from the color temp meter. Many members on this site debate the necessity of using color temp meters for DV and video but I get a kick out of carrying my color meter around with me and learning about the color of light.
