Mixed formats

I just shot a wedding last Friday and used a 3rd camera which was a Sony PD100 as a Wide shot upstairs so I could have a audio feed from the church mixer. The 2 DVX cams were shooting 24pa 3x4 screen normal down in the front of the bride and groom. Anything that I need to do since I will be going to the Sony camera for a WS every so often? Can I leave the capture as 24 or capture the Sony footage in 29.97?

Re: Mixed formats

You won't have a choice -- the Sony footage will be captured in 29.97.

(So will the 24p footage, too, but the pulldown will be removed.)

If you want to edit in 24p, you can convert the Sony footage to 24p with DVfilm or something similar.

Or, click on the 24p Sonic Foundry white paper linked in this forum for instructions on how to do it in Vegas.

Keep in mind, though, that the 60i footage from the Sony, if converted to 24p, will lose a lot of resolution and won't look nearly as good as the DVX footage.

Or, you could edit it all in 60i.  You'll definitely see a difference in the footage, though (Sony v. DVX).

Re: Mixed formats

Since the sony cam is just a wide shot, converting it to 24p (and thus losing some rez) may not be such a bad option since incredibly detailed images wouldn't be so important for a wide shot.  I've done the 24p conversion using Vegas of 60i footage from a Sony TRV30, and it didn't look really all that much worse than the original 60i version did  :)

Even with a little loss in rez, the shots would be a lot easier to match with the DVX footage if it was in 24p.

Re: Mixed formats

Thanks for the answers. I guess I will leave the Sony footage alone and just go with 29.97. I dont have DV film software. Its not that expensive, but Iam in the process of picking up a wireless mic and a shotgun at the moment. I have been renting a Electrosonic 195 lately, and the rental house is sticking it to me on that. Found a new Senn Evo yesterday thats still in the box for 367.00. Not a bad deal. They are having to sell it as a demo since its been on display.

Re: Mixed formats

Yeah, there's a tutorial on the Sony website about converting footage to look more filmish, and they give a recipe for how to convert it to a 24-frame frame rate. It will obviously not be "real" 24P, but considering it's basically free to try it, you should probably give it a shot.
