Just letting you guys know I shot (Directed/DP) a Mitsubishi car commercial thats airing right now in the US with the DVX. I'ts the "Free gas" ad with all the gas station price signs. I shot all those not the running footage, but it intercuts with the 35mm running car footage great!

Thanks, it's my first national commercial. However they want me to shoot some running footage now, so I get to pay with some really fun toys soon.

I have seen it!! and I was thinking...hmm...that SURE LOOKS like 24p dv!! HAHHAHA funny I could "smell" 10 feet away on my couch..LOL

now if you had a reel-stream mod and a 35 adapter I would have NEVER guessed! ;)

Thanks guys, I can't wait to get the HVX, I have some plans for a little thing I call a "Shot Faker"
It's my own version of a camera car with a crane, but works out of an unmodified SUV or pickup but still allows for those dramatic driving shots. Of course it only works with handycams, but if the image is good enough from the HVX then I may just be able to pull it off.

I guess, we Brits will never see that commerical over here, oh well

(p.s, can anyone get hold of a screen grab/clip)

Congratulations!

I don't want to pry, and if it's a secret, please don't tell. But could you give us a range of what someone bills for something like that? Was it shot for the ad agency? Do you retain the copyright to the footage, or is it a "buyout"? Is it a limited license, and should they run internationally, will you see more $?

Again, I understand this is priviledged information, and if you want to answer in general terms about your experience, that would be fine. Just trying to get a handle on the deals made for video stuff.

thanks.

DGA rate for 1 day shooting on comercials is over $10,000. I am not yet DGA, so I made less than half of that. If I keep shooting this stuff I will have to join DGA and probably local 600 (Cinematographers union) as well. The problem is that the intial entry fee's are imense. $7,500 for DGA and like $9000 for local 600 as a DP. I don't have exact figures but this is what I was told.
I do not own any of the footage. It is the client's and is conducted like work for hire, so they own it. Yes this was done with and for BBDO advertising agency.

Mostly because all the big agencies are DGA signatory and also part of AICP (Association of Independent Commercial producers). That means if the unions find out they are hiring a non union director/DP they will get heavily fined. There is usually a grace period and some ways around it for the short term, so I'll just have to see how far this goes for now. I don't really mind joining as long as the money is comming in to pay for it, they have the best benefits package in the whole industry as well as all sorts of special screenings and events. However technically once I join, I'm not allowed to shoot non union projects, but that is very hard to enforce.

Thanks again!

So, as a DGA and Local 600 member, you're probably required to hire union members and pay union rates, right?

Is that day rate inclusive of expenses, or are you (or better- is it industry standard practice) to bill for equipment, cameras, grip trucks etc. In the still world, it can vary, but the client typically expects to get basic gear included, and extras billed as expenses.

What's the policy?

Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Well, unlike photography, which I still do too, the producer and production company are responsible for all of that, and in exchange they get a production fee. This is usually %20 of the budget. My fee is just for my services as Director and/or DP nothing else. The budget on national commercials starts at about $150,000. So a director usually will get about %10 as a fee.
It's a good gig but very, very competitive and there are meny more directord than commercials to be shot. Oh and yes, a union shoot has all union IATSI members.

Everything is so unionized there! Good thing the Guerilla rules in the third world!
We guerillas conduct hit and run tactics on the capital cities and take a chunk out of the beaurucratic film and advertising industry!! We run back to the island where we have post and prod facilities out of the reach of unions AND taxes!
