This is making me crazy. Here's the scenario:
Played a clip back from in-camera on set yesterday multiple times, so I know it recorded. It was towards the end of the card, but not the last clip. Looking at the footage today, and it's gone. There's no gap in the .mts sequence, goes from 80 to 81, 82, as the last 3 clips, and this one should have been at appx. 80 - not the last clip on the card.
Once this card was full, I followed all best practices - LOCKED the card the second it was ejected, made a .dmg using the mac disc utility, converted files to prores using toast. This morning, reviewed footage, and the clip is gone. It's like the clip never existed, and it's the only one missing.
This morning, after discovering the missing clip, I ran the Restorer software on a pc on the card, with the card locked, and it found an error. I unlocked the card, re-ran restorer, and it said the error was not critical and that the card was fine. I re-locked the card. The clip is still missing.
I tried viewing the card in-camera, and the clip is not on it.
I know it's deliberately difficult to delete a clip, requiring multiple steps, and I am certain I didn't delete it onset, nor did anyone else and other than for a brief moment, I was the only camera op.
Here's one suspicion. When I walked away from the camera, someone accidentally unplugged the power supply. I can't recall when this happened, but I know it was some time after the clip had been recorded and viewed, so it had been written.
I've checked the card in-camera, and it's not there either.
I'm using authentic Pana SD 16gb cards, so that's not it. I'm certainly not ruling out operator error, but can't figure out how I could have done it, and would at least like to know how it happened, if it was my fault. It doesn't feel like a hardware issue either, as all the other footage from the day is fine. My only other suspicion is that something happened going from cam mode to pb, but we switched to playback mode to view multiple clips, and other than this one, they're all fine.
What happened here?! Is it possible that part of the clip could be lost, that it was at the head of, say, clip 80 and was somehow lost? Any guesses much appreciated. The only small comfort is that it was a blooper and wasn't destined for the final spot, but it was the funniest moment of the day. Most importantly, I just want to figure out what happened so that it never happens again.
