Mirrored RAID anyone?

Hey there,

I posted this in the Workflow section but didn't get any response. Hoping it might fair better here:

I've just watched Noah Kadner's great DVD about the HVX200 and the P2 workflow. In it, Noah describes a simple method to set up a mirrored RAID.

Basically, I'll be using his system as follows:

- Use the Macbook Pro on set with two external hard drives attached (set up as a single RAID drive on the Mac).

- When I copy contents from the P2 card to the mirrored RAID drive, two copies are then made and stored separately on each actual drive - one to be used as working clips, one as backup.

That sounds great. On the DVD Noah says that you should use drives of identical type and size, and preferably Firewire 800 drives. My MacBook Pro only has one connection for Firewire 800 and one for Firewire 400.

So my question is, is it ok to use the different connections at the same time or would it be better to just daisy-chain the two drives together and then to the Mac (via Firewire 800... would that work)?

I wonder if different connections would make any difference in the overall transfer speed?

Anyway, if anyone knows the answers to these questions that would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you can suggest some good stable drives that would excellent too. I was thinking of two Western Digital MyBook (500Gb) drives.

Thanks in advance. Cheers,

ALEX

Hi Alex-

Thanks for the compliment. Daisy chaining through Fire800 is the best way to go. The firewire 400 and 800 ports go to the same board anyway so all you'd be doing is slowing one drive down to Firewire 400. Firewire 800 is just as fast to one device as it is to many. In this case the bottleneck is almost always the USB connection to the camera or the PCMCIA connection to the P2 card, or the hard drive speed, but never Firewire 800 itself.

Thanks Noah!

Thanks Noah!

Great to get a personal reply, Noah. Appreciated.

Just wasn't clear on that one point.

Love your HVX vid. Has helped me a lot... and, boy, do I need help :)

Cheers,

ALEX
