Miracle of Silence film look.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

THANKS FOR THIS WONDERFUL POST.
Nice work. This was really informative and educative. Girl next to the lamp was the best of the lot and of course the first CU of the eyes of the man. Both are adjusted to perfection and looks natural. Looking for more from U.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

but I can see the 'girl with lamp' shot shows the power of the DVX latitude- and the one after, you can easily see the minor but still blown out highlights from the lamp but still so excellent.
but it CAN use a little more light like John suggested.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

@ briskiboy,

great stuff!!

A note about the noise issue, lately i too have been almost obssed about getting the "cleanest" signal possible, and i too have tried the plugin for vegas that you mention HOWEVER, IMHO this plugin produced to my eyes some very poor results, i have found that the filter in Tmpgenc YES thats right Tmpgenc do a bloody good job of removing noise, also de-interlaces at the same time. One problem takes forever, but is worth the wait.

Another option is too frameserve using avisenth (bad spelling, you know the one) using virtualdub filters (apparently the best denoise filters around) and frameserve to tmpgenc but this method although a little faster results are about the same...

I have spent way too many hours/settings...

you should denoise and deinteralce as the LAST step during transcoding for DVD not during post, just my views...

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Your grabs are lush, and wonderful instructional tools on how to define a 'look' for a film.

Here's one case where I think that the actors, content, and framing render your fears about grain moot. In other words, your story will carry the movie whether it was shot on the DVX, 16mm, or a 1-CCD Best-Buy special.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Yes, thanks for all your info briskboy - this is a prime example of why the DVXuser forums are the best there is!

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Briskiboy,

Thanks for the post. If you follow up on with this thread I'm with you the entire way!

I'm going to upgrade to Vegas now from Avide Express DV. I may warn you of future questions to come!

Anyways, very inspiring work, and a great eye. Cheers!! :D

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Looks like you have great actors too? How did you go about the process of casating them, if you don't mind? (Well, at least they are very photogenic and their emotions are very believable from the still frames. I don't know how they are in the film but I'm sure they are great.)

Any pointers in terms of working with the actors? Though this may not be the appropriate place for this question is iti? Anyhows, till next time. 8)

Thank you Enterdcable.

I am pleased that you find my post worthwhile and helpful.

I will be posting future grabs here in the coming days and weeks as they progress. I had no idea that this would so so constructive to be honest. I am so pleased to finally be getting soem feedback about the look of the film as no one has seen even the rushes yet.

And the feedback from John, Anhar and the rest of the people in this post have been very helpful in establishing a collection of opinions about the look i currently have and what i maybe should be going for. Its all very good for my future work and indeed what i can do to improive the look to appeal to a wider amout of users on this site.

Feel free to email me anytime with specific questions about anything i can advise you on. Vegas or whatever.

As for the actors. All but one are totally untrained and have never acted before in their lives. I am very happy with all the performances in the film. It is kind of a silent movie really with ony three lines of dialogue.

The Blonde girl is an up and coming Scottish Actress called Laura Harvey and the only trained actor in the cast of 3 in the film.

Basically my approach was that i recognised in them a quality as a person that suited the characters in my story. As i wrote and directed the piece two months ago. I worked on their strenghts giving very short and concise direction. I applied the principles of my own ways of directing with that in Judith Westons Acting for Film and Television book . So i knew how to get the best of them as people and didnt look upon them as anything other than that. It worked.

In a kind of artsy sense i had a blank canvas to paint on with them and there was no ego at all on set we just went through the work and let it fall down the lense. It was a wonderful experience. They had all in them already i just tried to presuade it out of them with simple playable direction.

my email is bryanlarkin_1@hotmail.com until i have the website up and running again.

May hear from you soon.

Thanks again.

Would you be so kind as to share with me where i can get my hands on this filter?

I have found that the filter produced some great results. hmm strange. As it really cleaned up the noise signal. I know that many many users could really benifit with out obsession of cleaning up noise. I say i lies more in lighting a set properly but i am always willing to learn more.

Thanks again

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

as i said earlier you can use good 'ol Tmpegnc's built in noise filter (version 2.5 plus) even better is Tmpgenc 3 express (i believe it reads HD-FX1/Z1 files correctly and can be used to make excellent dvds)

OR

Use the filter for VirtualDub, (i cant remember which one of the top of my head, but will have too get back too you on that one) and framserve using AVISYNTH to Tmpgec , this way is slightly faster but, its about the same result if a little long winded, thus i prefer the built in Tmpgenc noise remover, (play around with the settings, its a personal taste)

Any way after playback on a SD TV the results are very pleasing (even though on the PC i can still see some noise, i guess the TV cant show all the small defects of the image, and at the end of the day the TV is my target..)

On a side note i have been watching some FX1 footage and it produces some very clean images, very impressive, played from my laptop (WMV9 720P, 25P) to SD TV it just blows away everything, its very very filmic

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

great looking filter.....high contrast, some people may not like that, but the colors are brought out nicely

Another few grabs under different lighting set ups. With the filter we are using for the film.

All and any feedback comments welcome.
Many Thanks to all.

Re: Miracle of Silence film look.

Excellent stuff Bryan.

I also think some of the grabs are a just little bit dark and can be a bit less contrasting, specially on the first and second shot. As it added a bit of skin details and lost some of the beautifull smoothness of the actors/actress faces on CU. On the last girl shot she has a nice skin and eye color that were lost due to settings applied, but she is great... I mean the grab is great :) haha. This is just a personal opinion that will not add much to the overall already excelency you acomplished.

The most important thing achieved as per speedbump and Iamloser postings were the emotional content and 'look' you managed to get. They are fantastic. The grain issue and small adjustments are the minimum issue in this case.

Congrats on the overall result. Filmlook, actors, light, mood. It seams very beautifull. Look forward to the motion stuff.
