i had to watch with no sound so i cant really coment on the content, but just from an image standpoint, Im not sure why u gave them so much head room, and the shorter actor is emoting with his hands, most of which we cant see. Just seems like a very odd choice of shot. And I know its outside but it could have been light better. Sry to sound like a total ass, but with no sound i cant appreciat whats been said, so this is all i had to go on.
I liked ur titles, simple is almost always more pro.
Man I loved your colors on that, looked great. I have to give a comment about the framing as well, did you crop in post? maybe you could move the frame down a little as it is a bit distracting. Audio, by the way, sounded great, very clear dialog. Good work.
i love the shot personally, o well (your concerns are noted) 3s are not held on this shot. but there were more important framing issues i felt on this specific frame. the nature of the color is something i'm very fond of; in fact we shot that day as our outside to use "natures softbox" i.e. overcast. w00t
audio was done with MKH-416 and it was shot on a AG-DVX100A using a pretty nice homebrew Mini35 Rig.
honestly for our next project we will prolly move to building this with a meduim format lens. only problem is the flange length might make the rig a bit unweildy.
there are a lot of issues with this rig, in can produce some stunning images, but it really needs a lot of time and patience to get it to work right. 85mm lenses seem to yeild the best result. anything less you'll get some real vingetting on the sides. we decided that the vingetting was something we could deal with for the style of the project... so overall, it's not really a huge issue in our mind.
i really do think that with a well made medium format rig, this DVX can do absolute wonders at it's price, i'm amazed every single time i shoot something new with it and i've had it only 9 months now. a beautiful tool for a filmmaker. and with some TLC you can really tailor this thing to do exactly what you want.
I think it would be awsome to see a DVX fitted with a medium format mini "4x5" I guess you could call it. I shoot a lot of medium format "usually "6x4.5" and I love the look. IT always amazes me (coming from a 35mm backgound) that my wide angle 45mm f2.8 (appx 28mm-35 equivalent) lens gives me the same shallow depth of field as the DVX at full telephoto. You can get some wicked compositions with it. It is very surreal.
I have to admire your work ethic as I too believe that the more work a shot is, the better it looks, if not just to other people, but myself as well. I could care less if I have to spend a little extra time setting things up, if the shot looks good, that's all that matters. Keep up the good work. Interesting dialog by the way, looks like an intreaguing film.
Just got to watch the trailer. Very nice. I also thought the framing was too high, but the footage looked great and it got me really interested in the film. Good work. Very Clerks-esque ;D
since i have no idea what the "DOF" machine is, i can't see that it is.
this design was made starting in August of 2003 (i think right before that guy from europe (or was it south america?) posted his with the "CD-spinna". since we didn't have any DVX's at the time we just tried out our ideas on a crappy little sony handi-cam and then by May of 2004 we had a working model.
i had looked into taking some ideas from other people but we really wanted ours to come on and off REALLY REALLY fast. hense the use of the plastic detachable front of the DVX.. and the fact that ours can screw right into it is nice too. not to sound like an ass, but i often find it amusing seeing people build theirs with hot glue.
hey Kyle... good sound. was the 416 from the top or bottom? the framing? you see this style all over the place, so alls good if it fits the story your telling. love2cmore.
Good Job. I liked the dialogue. Pretty funny. Although I thought the blocking was a little wierd. You couldn't really see any of the guy on the rights face. I would have changed the angle a bit. Also, the amount of space above their heads was mentioned and I also found it a bit distracting. Great job though. Keep us posted as I'd love to see the finished project.
the movie visually is almost always very flat, and the colors are much in the same way. the style visually was very important to make this script work.
