I find that when color correcting in avid (and prob in any tool) if you pull the image too far from where it started you get a lot of noise introduced.
Does anyone have tips on how to color correct while minimizing the addition of noise?
You might want to start by auto-color-balancing/correcting. It usually works pretty well and at least as a good starting point. From there, you can adjust as necessary.
The other thing that I like to do is to use the color sample save feature and apply the same sample to other shots (as desired). That way, you can snapshot a "look" and apply it anywhere.
I am correcting hvx hd footage so it is 4:2:2 - but darker shots requiring more adjustment tend tobring out the noise issue after auto correcting - I guess its a limitation of how much you can push an image
You might want to try crushing the blacks and see how that looks. Of course, you'll lose detail BUT you may be able to eliminate a lot of that ugly noise.
As nice as the HVX looks, proper exposure is key (to any format) but the HVX is a little more noisy in the blue channel - so it is easier to get noise when color correction. Try to do most of your color correction on the mids and lights and leave the shadows alone as much as possible -
