miniDV Tapes

I know there was a post on miniDV tapes, but I would appreciated it if someone clearified the different brands of tapes. Which brand is good, which is better at dropouts, etc, the usual.

Or at least point me to a good source that has some quantitative paper on this subject.

Also, can someone clarify the differnce between the Panasonic "Pro" (AY-DVM63PQ) and "Master" (AY-DVM63MQ)?

Thanks

Re: miniDV Tapes

PQ and MQ tapes are both Dry lube, the MQ series is a more dense higher quality tape that causes less where. Every other tape from every other manufacture is a Wet lube tape. The difference is that dry lubes leave less residue, so should prevent head clogs better.

Best thing though is to pick one and stick to one. Mixing tape brands is where problems start.

Is it only about the deck/camera head's wear?

Or, do the tapes actually quality difference?

And, which one do you prefer?

Re: miniDV Tapes

The MQ tapes are the best tapes Panasonic makes. It has 4x the magnetic density of regular tape and the tracking gap has been reduced so it rolls better during transport, so if your jumping all over the place for some reason the tape should stay on track.

That said, Fuji of all companies continuously earns the highest marks for tape consistency.

Dang Jared,

You are everywhere and anywhere. Do you monitor the site 24/7? :)

Anyways, I sure appriciate it...

Do you know a website or reference review page that reviews the different tapes?

Re: miniDV Tapes

MQ.. there is a poll somewhere that shows what everyone uses.. probally in the hardware section.
