MiniDV Tapes other than Panasonic....

I have a project that someone else shot with their MiniDV camera but they want me to edit the project in my FCP system. I only have my DVX100 to use to get the footage into the computer. However, I am a bit skeptical in using other brands of tape inside my camera outside of Panasonic since the DVX100 heads are so sensitive. I do not have a deck yet so what are my options? I don't have access to the person's camera either. He just handed off these tapes for me to import into the MAC.

Re: MiniDV Tapes other than Panasonic....

You have two options, and no putting that dirty little tape in the DVX is not one of them, who knows where it has been :). First you could explain to the guy that you only use Master Quality tapes in your camera and that you will not contaminate it with his dirty cheap dv tape and you will need to use his camera, or you can get a cheap'o' dv camera from ebay and use that as your deck. DO NOT RISK YOU CAMERA'S PERFORMANCE by putting in a different brand tape. YOu will be mixing lubricants which will just gum up the heads. JUST SAY NO! ;D

Re: MiniDV Tapes other than Panasonic....

Great Question. It works fine not sure about wear and tear of other brands. Panasonic seems to be very forward about only using there brnd of tape for recording, perhaps some truth , probably lots of marketing. I have been using the sony PDVM-40n DVCaM (advanced metal evaporated ape) tapes and they work great. Lets hear from people about this, other brands good or bad??

Re: MiniDV Tapes other than Panasonic....

It's all aboout the mix. Don't.

Get a deck or a cheap camera to use instead.

Pick a brand and "stick" with it.
