MiniDV dub to BetaSP causes anomaly

My project was shot using the DVX100 (24p advanced), edited with FCP and firewired (29.97 NTSC) mastered using the camera as a deck. The uplink required betasp so I had the colorist dub it to betasp. On receipt by the stations there was notice of a slight fanning or double image. This sometimes happens with aggressive use of compression; however, except for the inherent MiniDV compression, the footage was not compressed. Similarly shot and prepared footage, for a prior broadcast of another series did not have this problem. The prior footage was delivered directly on digibeta and never converted to analog. I'm not sure if it was the analog conversion that caused this and so would be interested if anyone here has any experience or insight into this problem.

Re: MiniDV dub to BetaSP causes anomaly

JMF,
I have dubbed from my dvx100a to beta sp several times with no problems. I used 24pn though, i'm not sure if that would matter at all. But the dubs worked fine every time. I've also dubbed some 30P footage from my dvx to beta sp and no problems. Maybe something happend with the equiptment used to make the dub. Did it play back fine when they checked it at the colorist?

Re: MiniDV dub to BetaSP causes anomaly

The MiniDV went from my camera to the dub house, so I am not sure what equipment was used to create that beta sp. I believed they convert the MiniDV to workstock digibeta, color correct, and then dub the project to beta sp.

Yeah, I'd be inclined to inquire at the dub house (or follow the chain all the way back to your DV master). I've dubbed to Beta a number of times with little more than increased picture noise. If the 24pa cadence went to tape though, it could account for "unusual" looking playback. To me, it's noticeably different visually than standard 3:2 pulldown.

Or (and this is a long-shot, wild-hare, uninformed, speculative guess) maybe someone at the dub-house ran it through a standards converter that introduced the anomoly.

Re: MiniDV dub to BetaSP causes anomaly

I would definitely suspect that something happened at the dub house. I've transferred dozens of hours of footage to BetaSP, and it always comes out looking basically identical to the DV source.

Re: MiniDV dub to BetaSP causes anomaly

This happened to me actually about a month ago.. and it was the Transfer house's fault. Somehow they reversed the pulldown, and went from upper field first to lower field. dont ask me how, and got some pretty strange things. This went from DV to Digibeta to Beta SP, and we also had a MiniDV shot out as well from the Digibeta and the double strobe was there as well. In our situation, the place had no clue about the special pulldown, and I think they really didnt believe it was 24p anyways.
