miniDV data integrity.

Hello DVX users,

I’m new to the forum and new to videography. I’ve been visiting the forum for the last couple of months, and have found the postings here very useful. I’m about to take the plunge and get a DXV100A, but there’s a few question that I’d like to put out there to the more experienced DVX users. First off, so that you have a little perspective about where this question is coming from, I’m an engineer for a company that makes tape drives and I’m familiar with all the foibles of data storage on tape drives. I have read somewhere that the miniDV format uses track widths that are narrower than the DVCAM format, and of course it’s more difficult for a tape head to follower a narrower track. There are also other factors such as the tape itself, and how well the tape stacks on the cartridge reel. Depending on how well the tape path is designed and how good the tracking algorithm is, this may or may not be a problem on certain camcorders. Apologies for the long prelude, but here’s what I want to know: How prevalent is data fallout on miniDV tapes recorded by the DVX100 and played back on the DVX100? In what form does the data fallout manifest itself? Are complete frames lost? Partial frames lost? Audio tracks distorted? Images blurred? Has anyone gone back to replay a miniDV tape that they recorded in the past to find that the devices is having trouble reading the tape? Does anyone go to the trouble of shooting two takes on different tapes just to increase the odds that they will have at least one tape that has no data corruption?

Appreciate any insight you can provide
