MiniDV content recovery question

On two seperate tapes, I have several instances of distorted and damaged video (not horizontal lines, more random than that), both when I play back the tapes and with the captured footage in FCP.

On one of the tapes, the video distortion comes when the audio shoots up really loud into the red bars, and I understand that this can adversly affect the video. On the second tape, however, I don't think there were any audio problems. Also, when I first played back the second tape, the problem didn't occur, but since capturing, it occurs in playback.

So here are my questions:

Is there something other than audio peaking that can cause these issues?
Can the actual tapes be cleaned, and can these moments where the video is distorted be salvaged?

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

The interleaved structure of miniDV tapes precludes any possibility for the audio and video to cross contaminate each other. The more likely problem is either bad/reused tapes or a dirty/worn out drum in the camera.

hmmm...the tapes were brand new in both cases, so it must be the minidv camera i used to capture. and since the footage was fine during the first playback and now seems permanently damaged, the actual tapes must have gotten dirty or been damaged somehow, which is why i ask if tapes can be cleaned.

i definitely trust filmismymedium, but given the somewhat important content on these tapes, i guess i'd love a second opinion just to confirm that these part of the tape are lost once corrupted by a camera/deck.

If the drum of the capture device shed loose oxide onto the tape surface, it might benefit from an actual cleaning, however if the coating of the tape was damaged, then there isn't much hope.

If you have already captured the tape and you want to take a pass at cleaning it, then go for it. You won't do further harm if you are very careful and if you get lucky, you might just recover some of the damaged portion.

Best of luck.

so the next logical question then: how does one go about cleaning a minidv tape? i did a quick search on this forum but didn't find a thread on it.
