miniDV As Archive

Slightly off-topic, although the footage is shot with the HVX. :)

I was thinking of keeping a copy of my exported, uncompressed :30 sec. TV spots on miniDV in case I ever needed to pull one out of my hat. The real question is, if I need to pull one off down the road, what type of quality issues will I face?

The files are exported from FCP 5.1.2 as uncompressed, 48 kHz stereo using QuickTime conversion. It sure beats storing 900 MB files that are created up to 12 - 30 times a month. Thanks for any advice.

If you shot it in DV25, go ahead and put it on tape. Otherwise, don't bother -- you'll lose spatial resolution and color sampling resolution.

Why not put it on a DVD (as a QT file)? It would be much easier to work with, no need to capture etc., and you can pop the disk in and play it on your computer in seconds.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. In my case, it might not matter too much, cheesey car commercials you know. The only problem is as uncompressed files, I can only fit four spots per 4.7 GB DVD. In the past, I exported using TGA compression and it looked good, but cut the file size to 500 MB.

Then don't use uncompressed video -- use the native codec that you shot in.

Storing it uncompressed doesn't buy you anything (especially for archiving), since the native codec decompressed for the purpose of displaying it is identical to what you get from the same material that is stored uncompressed.
