mini35 vs. guerilla35.

The Mini35 costs $11,000US with all the necessary components, hence the reason users are opting for the G35 and Micro35/M2 adapters, both which are under a Grand. Should be even cheaper for you with your pounds...

I think moving still has the advantage over static.

Both have advantages. The mini35 is worth it if you have the money, probably, but consider that you'll need a better tripod, a boom mic (it's noisey) and handheld operation/steadicam/crane work will all become a lot more involved and expensive. So while $11,000 may not be a lot to you (it is to me!) it adds up beyond that. So I'd get a cheaper alternative (although currently only the mini35 gives you a "rightside up" image--the others give you a rotated image which you have to correct in post.)

Anyhow, static designs use microcrystalline wax usually, while moving ones use ground glass. Using capillary action (which is what the makers of the boss screen, the inspiration for the g35 so far as I know, used) I've found that you can make a totally smooth projection screen with microwax with no visible grain. (I have yet to produce a perfect one, but it's clearly possible and not that hard.) The issue, however, is that grain becomes much more visible as you change aperture settings on the SLR lens. At f8, you can see grain that might have been totally invisible at f2.8. On static designs, grain looks like fine static noise over the image. With ground glass designs, grain has a moving pattern that can be even more distracting, but the moving glass is meant to eliminate it. Ground glass is also thicker so it diffuses light a little more, softens footage a little more, etc. Moving designs are larger and require rails, which is a pain, too.

From what I've seen, neither is perfect, but both are pretty promising. I think oscillating microwax would be ideal (finest grain, not too much light loss, more pleasant diffusion in highlights, small, no circular graininess), but that's not currently availible.

My attitude: wait and see. I predict there will be no clear winner.

Brian thanks, yeah I meant G35 over micro35 (http://www.redrockmicro.com)

I dont understand the difference between moving or static? im wondering if I should go for the M2 micro or G35. all Im really sure of is Im very very excited right now about what people are doing with the DVX.

by the time I can afford that Andromida thing, the HVX will probably be out, Im worried about the possiblility of working with HD, I know HD is the way forward for me, but I dont know what im gonna need and at what cost.

I was a little late on that reply....
now i understand the difference thankyou.

I guess its a toss up between redrocks micro and the G35....thats before I even get into the worry of HD, one good thing is the micro35 will probably work on the HVX so if I get that its future proof.

Do they? Nobody seems to want to cough up exactly what they are using. I've asked the question on the public forums and never had a clear response.

Yes, sort of. I wonder how those guys are counterbalancing their cameras without a rails system of some sort? Heck, I have a hard enough time with my DVX, MB, FF, and a 5600 battery... It teeters just on the edge of being front heavy with a french flag and I would be totally screwed if I had a wide angle lens on there (although, I don't have a wide angle lens and haven't tried it...)

I feel like the rods are necessary and even then, I still don't know how well I'll be able to balance the thing...

I love the rod, no problem, give me rod.

I dont care how it handles as long as it looks good.

I just said you could use micro35 on an HVX, was that a lie seeings as it 16:9 or will that make not a blind bit of difference.

EDIT: when I say "looks good" i mean the footage not the camera. although sometimes I go down to the beach with my DVX to pick up chicks....they dont get it.

am I?

Im 24 in a few days. maybe that is young, dont really know how old you are.

what do you mean by that anyway?

I dont have a problem with being young, seeings as Ive already had films shown at londons NFT and on the motherloving MTV ;) ;)

just so the question doesnt get lost, will micro35/G35 still work on the HVX even though it shoots 16:9 ???

Ive been asking a lot of questions recently, if anyone has any questions about 3gp or any of that Im your man, I wanna give a little back to the dvx community :D

Hi,

Often times some of the 'regulars' here interpret frequent mispellings and substandard grammar (no offense, dude) as being from a 'young filmer' and it's kind of a running joke... that's all.

You are actually older than me. I'll be 22 soon. As for my accomplishments? Few and far between. You can see my one credential on IMDB or read any of the 2,999 posts I made under the alias 'thisiswells' here on DVXuser.

I'm just a real big dork who loves talkin' bout cameras !

Cheers,
Brian

Unix yes mate,

http://www.guerilla35.com/

and the micro is refered to and linked further up.

Brian, no worries man, my spelling probably isnt that great and you seem to know your ****.
nuff said.

I wish someone would discuss the pros and cons of micro35 vs guerilla35
and answer my question about it working on the hvx (it being 16:9)
???

There is no pros or cons of either yet, because neither have released a production model. It feels as though the Micro35 will be out within a couple weeks, as for the G35, who knows? It seems as though there are a series of copyright/patent issues holding them up, so its anyones guess how long before we can have a comprehensive comparison and fair pros and cons. In theory the G35 will be lighter and possibly easier to run and gun with, but I've hearing whispers of people using a rail system with it also, so that advantage is quickly gone.

the micro35 is out.

and you can buy a production model from their site.

I guess thats the first advantage of the micro35....you can buy it.

;) AND YOU GET A HAT!
