mini jack stereo/mono to XLR problem

I have a Rode VM and an ATR55. I just got my DVX and thought I would try these mics on it. So, I bought the RODE XLR -mini jack adaptor below.

This works fine with the Rode Mideo mic. Which has a 1/8" stereo plug (3 conductors).

But when I try it with the ATR55 there is no sound. The ATR55 has a 1/8" mono plug (2 conductors). I found that if I pull the 1/8" plug out of the adaptor..about 1/8"...then I get sound from the mic. It's not an exact position...and is prone to wiggling itself into a non-sound condition. The conductors need to be lined up between the plug and the adaptor. Does this make sense?

I don't really understand the connections between XLR and mini jacks...so I'm not sure if these items are totally compatable. Based on what I'm seeing, I don't think so...any advice?

Thanks,
Rob

That makes sense! I'd much rather have a XLR plug than a bunch of adaptors. Plus, I love playing with sharp instruments...and melting things. I'm gonna stop by Radio shack on the way home tonight.

Thank you, Rob

OK, I got a solder XLR connector from radio shack...but it doesn't have a pin-out diagram. So, what wire on the mic goes to what pin on the XLR?

Got it! Thanks you. Well, this mic (ATR55) kinda bites. It has several problems that I don't think I can live with. It was free so I can't complain. The RODE VM also has some problems..mainly that it seems to really pick up Handling noises on the DVX...and the O-rings squeek like a new pair of Nikes walking in an empty hallway at school.

So, in the meantime, I guess I'm stuck with the onboard mic untill I can spring for something better.

Thanks again!
