Mini Dv tapes???

Does anyone know whats the best for the Panasonic DVX100a? What is a mid grade? How much are they usually? Where is the BEST place to buy them. Thanks guys.

In my experience its best to just pick a tape and stick with it.... some tapes are a little different than others so if you going to use a panasonic tape keep buying that same tape model.

just use any tapes you like and stick with the same brand.
the mid grade are a little better MiniDv tapes. I heard there are less frame drops when you record them or something....
I really don't see any difference tho.

I'll second the Panasonic Professional-grade DV tapes, for a high quality tape at a totally reasonable price.

why is b&h discontinuing the panasonic ay-dvm63amq? is everyone doing this? where can i buy the amq's? what other tape should i use?

For users with experience with different tapes, if I have been using maxell tapes, would it be a good idea to swich to panasonic tapes?. I ask because they both are dry tapes.

Let me sort of hi-jack this topic... sorry.

If I use one panasonic tape... let's say the kind you would find at wal-mart. Then I decide to switch over to a higher quality panasonic tape, is there any danger in that?

When switching tape brands/qualities it is recommended to clean the heads first due to some cheap tapes left over residue. But, if it was only one or two tapes I would not worry too much.

Cleaning the heads can cause more problems than it solves....if you're using different types of Panasonic tapes, you should have zero problems. You should do a few minutes of test shots to be sure it's all good.

The only reason to ever do a head cleaning is if you know you are having problems (again, find this out by doing some test shots before any major shooting).

I have used Maxell, Fuji and Panasonic tapes interchangeably in all my miniDV cameras, including my DVX100B with no problems. They all use dry lube. I used a Sony tape only once in my little JVC camera and it gunked it up immediately. Sony is the only tape that uses a wet lube.

I found this recently:

Maybe it might help the debate a little.
