Re: Mini 35 adapter

Hello, guys. I am also excited to know get your review.
But, I would like to know how does it look when transferred to 35mm.
Has anyone tried this before? Did it look great?
Were there any complications? Or are there any 'do nots'?

Thanks in advance

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

Hi Patrick,
Just to clarify the movie you mention was shot with a homemade unit cost $500, the one Jarred is testing is the real deal costing $8000 USD.
Marla the movie looked amazing but i don't think it can compare to the quality of the REAL Mini 35 which has the ability to use true motion picture lens optics.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

Probably a dumb question, but does this mini35 configuration support the AG-LA7200G 16:9 Anamorphic Lens and/or is it necessary (i.e. a 35mm anamorphic would go on the 'front-end' of this config as the primary)?

Re: Mini 35 adapter

no such thing as a dumb question, or dumb answers :)

You cant use the Pana Ana Ada. You must use cinema anas ( Hawk etc.) anamorphics.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

If you want anamorphic with the mini35, you have three choices: either use squeeze mode on the DVX100A, or letterbox/stretch in post, or use cinema anamorphics. Problem with cinema anamorphics is that they will deliver a 2.66:1 aspect ratio, which cannot be properly displayed on any television in the world. You could unsqueeze it/crop it for TV display, or you could unsqueeze it for computer display, or you could crop the sides and transfer it to film, but using the full image on television can't be done (there are no 2.66:1 TV's out there).

Re: Mini 35 adapter

we couldnt wrangle the xl1 before we had to send the adapter back, so couldnt do a side by side, which woulda been nice. Sorry Barry :(

Re: Mini 35 adapter

yeah that thing certainly changes the ballgame. that shots are great, what sort of issue did you have with the light, did you have to add more than usual. the pics are a bit dark, but im on a lcd monitor right now. i also noticed the dvx was at f3 or somthing. instead of wide open. is there room for letting more light in? i would love to get one of these, but am just concerned about having to double dump light on everything to make get it exposed right.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

F/2.8 IS wide-open on the DVX when using the mini35. You have to be zoomed in 100% in order to fill the frame, and at 100% zoom, the maximum wide open you can get is f/2.8.

I typically used the mini35 at f/3.4 or f/4. It is so hypercritical to focus on the ground glass that I was willing to give up a half-stop or so in order to gain the extra hundredth of a millimeter of depth of field to make sure that the ground glass was in focus.

You will definitely have to have much more light for the mini35. You lose a minimum of about 2.5 stops, and I found I was operating with more like a 3 to 3.5-stop loss, between the zooming in and the ground glass and the DOF-for-ground-glass issues.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

hmm. thanks for the explanation of the iris on that on.. i had forgotten about that issue on the dvx. well i guess thats not too bad.. all said and done. espescially outdoors i could live with 3.5 stops loss on a well lit set, considering it just keeps me from adding a littl more nd, or irising down a bit which i really usually have to do anyway i guess. wow. seems to me that i could really use one of these wacky gizmos. i just dont want to start drooling over it until i got the cash to make good.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

After using it, I really, really want one. At $8500, it's going to have to wait.

The homemade mini35 gizmos seem interesting, but it seems like they haven't sorted out all the issues, especially for the DVX version. The static-ground-glass version looks intriguing but I haven't seen actual NTSC footage of it, just computer footage, so I don't know how the ground glass pattern actually looks. Biggest drawback to the homemade versions so far, in my little opinion, is that everything is upside down and backwards when shooting.

If someone would produce a professionally-constructed version that allowed for proper re-orienting of the image, I'd probably pay a thousand bucks for it, if it looked pro and delivered the results! And if it's designed specifically for the DVX, hopefully they'll be able to find a combination of diopters that allows you to keep the DVX lens on wide-angle, so you don't lose that 1.5 stops from zooming in, and it'd be easier to keep the GG in critical focus.

Re: Mini 35 adapter

Hey what setting on the WM9 Encoder did you get use to get that good of quality? I noticed it's 999Kbit/sec Variable Rate. But 999? I don't think it's that high is it?

Re: Mini 35 adapter

you gotta use the force. its not a preset.
