Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

Jarred,

Thanks for the review. I am considdering this unit for my DVX and plan to rent one to test it out--see if it is worth the money and I can justify it for my business.

One question I have is; how loud is the unit while spinning the ground glass? In a small room would a shotgun pick it up?

Also, out of curiosity, I wonder if dialing up the sharpness in the DVX would help with the sofness of the image through the P+S.

Will

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

the sound is almost inaudible.. so quiet you can forget to turn it on.

As for sharpness.. if you increase the sharpness you will just make the ground glass sharper... but when you rent it you can test it out.

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

The motor is indeed quite quiet, and I forgot to turn it on a few times.

However, in an utterly silent room, you may hear it. It sounds almost exactly like an Eclair NPR or a CP16.

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

Anyone know of a rental house in Los Angeles that rents the Mini 35 Adapter for the DVX100?

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

I came across a website that was talking about the mini35 digital image converter for the dvx100(A), but I was a bit confused about the information they gave (new person here, trying to get information). So what you have to do is buy 3 things, is that it? The base converter, the adapter (for your specific camera; in this case, the dvx100(a)), AND a lense to attach to the adapter? From the prices I've seen on the site, looks like all three things easily sum up to over 20,000 :o

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

You need the main unit, which is around $6500 or so, and also the adapter for the specific camera, which is like $1600 or so. And then yes, some sort of lens. You can use still-camera lenses if you get the Nikon or Contax mount, or you can use cinema lenses if you get the PL mount. Cinema lenses are very, very expensive, but they rent fairly cheaply.

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

Hi:

I've been researching about mounting 35mm lenses on DVX100 and this looks like a great adapter. The "hombe built" adapters explained in some sites are interesting too but I've got a question.

What's a ground glass? what for is it? they say every adapter should have one ¿?. My language is spanish so I can't get the meaning of that term "ground glass" so if someone could explain me....

I understood that is a "blurred" glass but I can't imagine how a blurred cristal can form a clear image. Obviously I don't know nothing about optics so please, does anyone knows?

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

THanks for sharing the tests... definitely a distinct "look"... I really like it... I wouldn't worry about the sharpness issue at all.. I use a black diffusion (not quite as "glowie" as a pro-mist) but it really helps on CUs of faces. So now people can stop grousing about the unavailability of such a device.
It is, for most, in the category of "factor into the budget" the rental for the number of days of expected use.... but then again there are a lot of items in that category. You don't need to have something like this set of tools sitting on the shelf while you're writing or editing. Leave that to the rental outfits... For us, it's nice to know that it's available in the real world here and now.

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

The place where I got my DVX from are selling a demo model Sony PD150, with a Mini35 rig and a Carl Zeiss Arriflex 35mm lens all for £6000. Which I thought was a bargain, just wondering how much it would cost and if it were possible to adapt the Mini35 for the DVX? They're all in good condition.

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

If it's a Series 400 mini35, you should be able to adapt it to the DVX by buying the DVX adapter, which will be about $1650 US.

If I'm doing my math correctly, it sounds like you're looking at a used PD150 and a used mini35, which would carry about a $7000 US used value ($11,500 US new), for about $11,000 US. So, depends on the value of the lens -- if it's a great phenomenal lens worth a whole lotta money, then that might be a good deal. If not, sounds like it's priced too high for used gear (when converted to US $... your mileage in the UK may of course vary).

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

I can't remember exactly what the lens was, I'll give them a call at some point tho and find out. From what you're saying Barry, sounds like it would just be cheaper to buy from the US anyway. Gah, why is the UK so goddamm expensive!! >:(

Re: Mini 35 adapter for DVX100 review

Just used the pro 35 with varicam, noticed 2 plus more stops using ziess lens, and the motor was pretty loud. we had 575 lights with some 1200's and a 4 k...it looked very good..
I am looking forward to using the pro mini next thanks for the information.....
