ITs a bit high for most people, but the rental is pretty reasonable. The lenses alone cost 3x the price of the camera each but again, the rentals arn't too bad. Its one of those things you hope to convince the production manager that you need
Thanks again Barry for posting that compare. And yes, its not as sharp mostly because of the ground glass, its basically like shooting through a promist filter, softens everything a little. As Barry said thats not a bad thing.. unless you want that super sharp video look.
i agree, it makes the small format more watchable, and lees harsh,
...but for a film out what do you guys think?, ive been thinking the anamorphic would still be the way to go, just because it will soften up some on its own when its projected so big... and the mini 35 footage would begin to look a little "28 days later" any thoughts on this?
the biggest advantage of the mini 35 is the depth you get from using cine lenses. You can pick a foot you want in focus and hit it. You cant do that with the DVX no matter how hard you try.
absolutely .. id love to have one, but what do you think about its viability for a film out? would it start to get a little too soft? i guess it would be as least as good as anything the pd150 ever did
the whole point is to match what a film would look like, you get the color of film lenses and the grain is simulated by the ground glass. I went to rainmaker studios to watch a blow up projected of the pro 35 adapter on a sony HD cam, and it looked fantastic. Comparing it to the XL1 that has alot less resolution than the DVX isnt viable.
ok.. but im not doubting the usefulnees or potency of the tool- im really just asking whether you think the extra softness added from the mini on the dvx becomes a bit too apparent when projected.
I know IAL, i know you know what your talking about.. its a good question. If you think about a film transfer, your not only only getting the ground glass effect but also the grain from the film stock, so you get double the effect.
To me it looks like film, its soft but not really soft, and you can tune the ground glass speed to how much you want the effect. I guess its time for me to buy a projector.
k, yeah, thats what i meant. but the same thing for the softness too. its definitely a gainer for a small format to soften it, but when projected , its gets softened again, i was wondering if it all added up to too much.
I'll answer your question as soon as I get a chance to screen my print. I put some mini35 footage on there and blew it up to 35mm... just haven't had a chance to see it yet.
I think you're probably on the right track though -- I think DVX+anamorphic will deliver sharper results than DVX/mini35, especially when considering a film-out, and not only for the reasons Jarred said (which are, to repeat, that the mini35 footage softens things up like a pro-mist already, and then you compound that with film grain)...
I think the DVX/anamorphic will probably end up giving you a shallow-enough focus look, simply because the amount of magnification the footage will undergo will tend to amplify the out-of-focusness of shots. Lots of people think that DOF is influenced by imaging size (it doesn't) but then don't take into account playback size (which does!) That's where the Circle of Confusion diameter will really come into play. Something that looks perfectly sharp on a 9" TV may look noticeably out of focus on a 60" projection, and look astoundingly out of focus on the big screen. (Witness the entirety of "28 Days Later").
DVX+anamorphic will almost certainly not look like 35mm or even 16mm photography, but the out-of-focusness that it has will be amplified by the blow-up. The question is, is the mini35 so soft already that a blow-up makes it way too soft?
I have the answer, it's sitting in a box on my desk, I just have to screen it to find out! I've got Anamorphic, SoftScreen and mini35 footage on there. Practical observation trumps theory every day of the week, and soon (hopefully) I'll get around to screening it, make those practical observations, and then report back!
Barry you are a god.. I am very interested in what you think. Maybe you should round up some DVXuser cowboys and break into your local theater at night to check it out
Well, that's supposed to already be happening, but my theater connection is not coming through yet.
I shot some stuff on my 35mm camera a few months ago and tried to get it screened, and I found unbelievable resistance. Since all the theaters got bought out by large corporate chains (we basically only have Century and Regal here anymore) they're all hyper-resistant to show any outside, non-authorized film in their projectors. I've *never* had as much trouble getting cooperation from a business.
So, one of my cinematographer friends has a good friend who's a projectionist, so we're trying to get in there, but it just hasn't happened yet.
I'll let you all know how it turns out. Also, you should be able to order a copy of the print and screen it yourselves as well. I don't know what the dupe cost might be though. It should be fairly inexpensive. I keep meaning to check on that, but I don't want to call the lab back until I've at least screened it, y'know?
