minDV tapes....for dvx

Ok, I have just orderd my dvx100, and I was planning on using Sony Premiums, and i was just wondering if these will be fine.I dont want to gum up my heads using relativly cheap tapes, so i was just wondering if I should use these or panasonic masters, also what is the cheaper set of tapes out of the 2?

thanks,Devon

I have been using the sony dvm-60prl (sony Premium) and have found them to be great. I have used thses tapes in the sony vx2000, canon xl1s, and now the DVX100a, always with great results. The peoblem comes in when you are switching brands because different brands can use different lubes, and it is tha change in lubes that gets things gumed up. I get my tapes from tape resources for about 3.50 ea, and sometimes cheaper when they are on sale. Look around on the net for your tapes, it'll be a lot cheaper then the store (about $12 ea.)

Just use the panasonic MQ tapes. They are the best. And at 5 bucks a pop not expensive enough to warrent the use of anything else, even for a no budget jerk like me..... www.tapestockonline.com has good prices on them, the most important thing is to stick with one kind of tape all the time, and to not re-use tapes.

i also always used SONY tapes (but the excellence not the premiums) with no problems. i can only repeat the tip: stick with one brand. do NOT switch between SONY and Panasonic. use one or the other.

Hi,
I know this is an old thread but this is the appropriate subject. I have been using Sony miniDV tape for a long time with no problem. I am now working at a facility where my video production on my miniDV tape will be put into an adapter and run on a DVC Pro deck. Problem is - the deck has been running Fuji DVCPro tapes. Are my Sony tapes going to gum up the DVC Pro deck?

Thanks. Glad I found this site.

I have been trying to strictly use Panasonic tape stock in my 100a, but from time to time a client will show up to a shoot wanting to use their own tape. Today for instance my client wanted to use thair Sony DVcam tape. I ended up insisting we use my Panasonic tape but it ended up being at my expense. Not too cost effective on a multi-cam setup for several hours.

So, how bad is it really to periodically switch tapes, even if the stock is "premium?" Or is this just an urban myth?

Thanks~

Its not an urban myth. The problem lies within the different lube types that are used by different manufacturers. Panasonic, mostly uses DRY lube. Sony uses WET lube on their tapes (I say "mostly", because I dont know that this is the case with every single tape line that these two brands offer). So, if panny uses dry and sony uses wet, the heads on your dvx or any cam for that matter are gonna get affected. they will get dirty. or cause artifacts when recording. just try not to do it, or manually clean your heads out regularly.

Fast Question:

So if i use sony tapes to my dvx i should also use sony headcleaners? What if i want to switch to panasonic tapes, which headcleaner should i use? sony or panasonic?

I called sony about the Sony Premium tapes and was informed that they are dry lube.
I actually called again the next day to make sure.

I have always used Panasonic tapes with my DVX, but not MQ's. Suppose I want to start using MQ tapes instead of the current model, that is ok right, because they are both Panasonic so will both be the same lube?
