mind bending problem

Hi there all. New chap here, attracted by all the glitz of dvxuser! ;)

Anyway, I have encountered a bit of a problem. Premiere (the ye olde 6.0 version), my only video editing app I have, is displaying the preview footage in the monitor window weirdly: it only displays the top half of the footage. Not only that but any video exported using Premiere in the past is also playing in the same fashion when opened in Windows Media Player or Real Player. The vids I've tried to play properly are in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio (sometimes not keeping the 16:9 ratio). Everything else is fine; it's just the picture.

More clues: I recently got an upgrade for my comp that included an extra 2G of RAM and an GF8800 video card - not sure if that has anything to do with it - but I hadn't done any video editing until now, after the upgrade, ie, it worked perfect before the upgrade. May I add that I'm also running nvidia's latest BETA drivers (ooh, dammit...).

If anyone can help... extreme appreciation awaits you! :)

Could be a codec problem... I've been scratching the Net for stuff, but no bananas so far... :(

I would install a different video card driver, I believe Nvidia has older drivers on their site. If you still have the problem at least you'll know it's not because of your driver.

Very interesting. I use Premiere 6.0 too, but have never seen this problem.

My question would be......if you export the video to a DV AVI file and burn it to a DVD, how does it play on a TV? Do you see the full image, or only the top half?

It wouldn't hurt to play with the settings for your new video card and see if it helps. Especially the hardware acceleration.

Keep us posted.

Hey Sacksnack and chapelgrovefilms, thanks for the responses! I'll try the video card driver thing as I do have a fairly recent but older driver on the original card install disc. I've heard hardware acceleration can stuff with your editing programs for some silly reason, but I'd hate to have to switch it off and on every time I need either the card's power or editing app.

I have since posting this thread uninstalled Premiere... I thought I had the install disc handy but it's actually over at a friend's house... I will get it back soon however and I will post whatever happens up for your interest/education! Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it! :D

Here's the answer chaps! Driver problem. Lesson learned: do not use BETA video card drivers if you're editing. I think they must conflict with the codecs or something... but I really don't know. All is working though so I'm happy. I hope this will help generations to come :D
