John just starts talking about chips and salsa, or carne and corona; and now I'm hungry.

Damn you John, and your delicious Mexican treats.

Damn it; now I'm hungry too. Mexican Food Rules. I'm going to go into meltdown when I get back east. Going to have to import some lil' chicka maid named Lola.

Honesty? That's your argument. Honestly that's the weakest argument yet. :) But, once again, education would cure that problem too. Not some temporary drug. Why are people always looking for a quick solution, in pill form? But I digress. I live in a country where honesty does NOT exist. Truth is frowned upon and lies are preffered (i.e., the Land of Smiles). America is the most honest country I've ever lived in. When Americans don't like something, they tell you. When there's a problem, they try to fix it. I miss home, I miss America! ...Sometimes.

Without sounding cliche; the answer is inside each of us. We ALL have the power to make ourselves happy, relaxed, honest, and creative, without consuming anything. Just depends on how patient, strong, and clever you are. All we really need is love, sustanence, and a DVX100 with NLE. Everything else is unnecessary and only used to satisfy our own greed.

GenJerDan - I wish there were fewer laws too. But just erasing the law would be an irresponsible choice. There needs to be education first. It might take decades or centuries to get us ready for a truly free society. Evolution takes time. Can't be done overnight. Removing one law might create more problems than answers. For every one law removed, 100 laws are created to control the aftermath. Alcohol is a good example.

It's always the idiots who ruin it for the rest of us. Get rid of the idiots and we would't need laws and we wouldn't need this thread.

Do you think there's no Mexican food here?

But hey -- I'll help you interview!

"Get some sour cream and onion chips with some dip, man, some beef jerky, some peanut butter. Get some Haagen-Das ice cream bars, a whole lot, make sure chocolate, gotta have chocolate, maaan. Some popcorn, red popcorn, graham crackers, graham crackers with marshmallows, the little marshmallows and little chocolate bars and we can make smooooooores maaaan! Also, celery, grape jelly, Captain Crunch with the little Crunch berries, pizzas. We need two big pizzas, man, everything on 'em, with water, whole lotta water, and Funyons."

Little relevant/easy movie trivia. What movie was that?

On topic, it always seemed strange to me to gather and advertise that you smoke weed. I mean, that's a cops dream. Most of the potheads I know are way to paranoid for that, they use all kinds of code words even among friends much less walking down a street going "Hey, I'm not holding currently but come look me up after the parade..........yay, yay weed, take a look at me, now everyone knows where to find THC, yay, yay weed, take a look at......".

Now the "Million Marijuana keep-this-on-the-way-down-low-don't-bring-anyone-over-I-don't-know, Just Stay Home and Chill Thing" Makes sence.

As usual, all arguments put forth against this drug are personal or political and based on cojecture rather than fact! I have yet to encounter any solid evidence to suggest pot is a detriment to us or our society. I do see however that we have been trained well by our society to stand up and declare that the disinformation we have recieved re this drug is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There are way more serious issues that require our attention before we get all bent out of shape over an issue that should be nothing more than personal choice. Abuse anything and you will have problems...Just my 2c.

Pot is utterly harmless. Does it do particularly anything good for you? No. Anything bad? Nothing that any credible scientist can discern (slows reaction time but so doesn't getting less sleep than you should which is endemic in our country as is). The biggest problem with it being so highly regulated is that it makes very hard for credible medical research to be done on it and all the research that has been done in the last ten years points towards many potential benifits (like a non-opiate based, non-addictive pain killer). The countries where it is legal only tend to have problems from Americans going there in droves and smoking an ounce a day. Let's not even get into the many wonders of hemp itself. You can make just about anything from the plant (fabric wise) and even an ethanol from the seeds, plus its very hardy and renewable. I don't smoke anymore, though I used to in my teens (a lot), and I completely agree with Isara that it is not needed and is part of a cycle of greed, I'm buddhist in fact and have been for years, but I think of it as skillful means to work within a society to slowly change things towards a better more compassionate society, and in this case I just feel the illegality of pot is more harmful as a whole than if it were legalized. People can't change overnight but they are more receptive to learning and change and fostering compassion if they aren't always looking over their shoulder.

Mino, you typed faster than I could.

"Abuse anything and you will have problems..."

Exactly. The middle path, my friend. That's the way to go.

OK. Here's some education for ya. :cheesy:

In 1937 Anslinger testified before Congress in favor of Marijuana Prohibition by saying: "Marijuana is the most violence causing drug in the history of mankind." "Most marijuana smokers are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes."

That's the best they could come up with for a reason to outlaw it.

Me, I don't support such laws. They're icky.

"See, I think drugs have done some *good* things for us, I really do.
And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a
favor: Go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and
all your CD's and burn 'em. Cause you know what? The musicians who've
made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years...
RRRRRRRRRRRRReal ****in' high on drugs." --Bil Hicks

Listen folks, it should be de-criminalized and that's that. For ****'s sake, child molesters do less time than drug dealers. Talk about harm to society. Gather up the potheads, give 'em a reservation, put a wall around it and let 'em be. Lock up the sickos who want to have sex with children and throw away the key.

Decriminalize it, mannnnnnnnnnnnn.
Ditto. Speeding is not legal, either, but at least you don't go to jail when caught (most of the time).

Can't agree with many things the Canadian government is doing, but the trend toward decriminalizing pot in Canada is good, IMO.

BTW, I have never smoked it (not counting second-hand at certain events), nor do I wish my kids to try. There are enough stupid people on the planet already, why increase the count?

Lastly, we American's are lazy and fat enough. We don't need more people staying inside and getting high.

. . .and then, turning into LIZARDS!!!!!! (Or am I the only one who saw Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams?)

Just as a side note when I was younger me and friends would get stoned as a precursor to rock climbing or playing tennis or some other physical activity. I never found it to be something that made you sit around and do nothing, well, except some video game marathons it would prompt:)

Calling all marijuana smokers lazy and useless would be stereo typing. We are surrounded by stoners all day you just don't know it. My friend just found out his dad smokes and he lives in a 10 million dollar home on the beach.

Mino - I've never seen or read anything anti-pot, I'm not religious, and I'm pro-freedom (my Thai name is Isara, which means FREEDOM). I'm speakng about my own (individual) beliefs on how I feel drugs (alcohol, caffeine, etc.) prevent are species from mentally evolving into something greater than what we are now. (I feel we're too reliant on them.) I agree, alot of anti-pot people are robots, just repeating what they've been taught. But I am a free-thinker, against "the man", anti-establishment, and self-taught.

Ian - If you went rock climbing after smoking pot, you're lucky natural selection didn't remove you from this planet. Quit while you're ahead buddy.

No Ca$h - Rich and a home on the beach? Hmmm Sounds like the stereotypical rich pot smoker to me.

Everyone - It's not about health or what you can make from it (Ian=MacGyver). You can NOT just remove a law that has been in place for generations (even if it was for "icky" reasons, genjerdan). If you think you can just de-criminalize it tomorrow and everything will be cool, you are sadly mistaken and possibly the reason why pot is illegal in the first place. :) The government will need to create 100 laws to control the idiots they created by removing one law. Educating the general public first, so they are responsible and not abusers of this new freedom, that is the ONLY way. And that takes time. Maybe a looooooong time. True (lasting) change is slow, it can NOT be done overnight. And if you have a problem with education (first) then you need to re-evaluate your reason for wanting it de-criminalized. We can not be greedy or selfish. We must be visionaries, thinking about future generations, and the BEST way to guarantee lack of abuse (thus preventing criminalization, again) is with education.

And you're right, the laws are misbalanced. Violent offenders getting less time than non-violent offenders. The justice system is screwed up. But that's another thread on another day.

Sorry to be so serious, but this and "Where's the Beef?" are the ONLY topics I really have strong opinions about. :)

There would have to be no new laws needed to be put in place, Isara. People are smoking as much pot now as there would be whether the ancient and unfounded marijuana stamp act was in place. People do what they are going to do. What it does remove, and this has been illustrated successfully in countries that have decriminalized pot, is huge infrastructure of nonviolent offenders being put into a prison system that spits violent offenders back out. Nothing else would change, except a few coffeeshops would sell pot. No havoc in the streets, no up in usage. This is borne out by experiences of other countries. Canada right now is doing a good job of it. The only violent thing about pot is the drug runners who smuggle it into this country. It was criminalized in the first place for political reasons, not public welfare. Look into the history of the marijuana stamp act (check out the doc Grass) and read up on it. You'll see the reasons are as nefarious as Dan's quotes said.

As for climbing stoned? I've climbed with all the top climbers in the US when I lived in California. Let's just say it's more common than not and climbers are some of the safest more conscientious lot in the sporting world. You maybe confusing the effects of marijuana with alcohol, a true bane of society and a drug far more abused than any other. We saw criminalizing that gets you though: really rich gangsters.

But hey -- I'll help you interview!

I'm gonna have to to be the judge and jury on that one. I've spent time in FL and GA and went to the MEX Places in those states and you know what?

None of them surpassed the Robertos, Albertos taco shops out here. But, to be fair; I can make some killer Carne Asada myself. I have always found EAST COAST MEX food to be more TEX MEX; which is completely different than what SO CAL offers.

Put another way; try finding good 'Barbeque' in San Diego.

It's all good; we'll just send many miles drinking Margaritas and Coronas looking for the best place. :cheesy:
