Most video enthusiasts have at least heard about Gain's "Smell Like A Million Bucks" video contest. I heard about it, entered, placed 10th in most viewed, made the "Top 25", and now spend most of my day in the social networking world. The experience is becoming surreal. Me, my partner, and our wives eat, drink, and sleep this thing. We had no idea that entering this contest would be such a roller-coaster ride.
I've been a silent member of DVX User since 2007--when I bought my DVX. My technical abilities don't warrant giving advise in this forum and I have a very full-time career that makes it almost impossible to be as good at filmmaking as so many of you are. So, I glean from you. I research the answers to my questions here and only here. I thank you all for your willingness to teach others the trade and provide a means for us to pursue excellence in this beautiful and exciting medium.
For the first time in four years, I finally feel worthy to join your forum and share my success with you.
The internet is full of dramatic tales of "unmerciful and unfair treatment" of several hundred contestants who did not make it to the "Top 25." I will be the first to admit that my submission to the contest was not the best. Although, I do believe that my video has a great comedic story line, great acting, and smart delivery. There are no special effects and my DVX is far from HD--but I am very happy with our video. To the other contestants in the "Top 25", I do wish them success. There are some really good videos in the Top 25 and some that I question. There were many, many videos that were excellent but for some reason did not make the Top 25. We all need to remember, before posting negative comments about Gain, that this is Gain's money and their contest. They have a legal team that will protect them and the contestants. There is no reason to analyze the reasons behind the final selection of the Top 25.
The comedic script of our commercial was crafted by "Lance M" and initially conceived by his wife. I shot and edited the commercial, which took about 38 hours. All of my other projects have been documentaries and very fancy home movies. This has been the first project where notoriety has come into play.
I beg you all to watch my video for two reasons. First and foremost, I need your votes to win--somebody's going to, I think it should be me. Second, I would like to have some constructive criticism, mixed in with some compliments too of course! I will take your advice and become a better filmmaker for sure.
