Mildly Interesting Discovery (Possible Max Fan fix?)

So ever since I received my F35, I've had the 'Max Fan' issue. Previously tried to open it up, but one of the screws in a fan mount seems to be worn down, so I was unable to continue to pull out the fans.
Other than that, I have 2 of my assigns set to auto-fan. They momentarily spin the fans down before the F35 ramps back up to max. Sometimes. Otherwise it just ignores the buttons.

Fast forward to today, where I received an Arri B4-PL adapter for an old B4 lens of mine. Despite the adapter having a bit of a deep rear element, it fits! So I get to play around with an unpowered zoom lens, not bad.
Then I remember that the F23 was built for B4 lenses, and maaaaaaaybe....
Yep, there it is, lens port on the front panel. Looks like a 12 pin hirose. Couldn't hurt. So I plug it in.

The lens comes to life, but more importantly, the fans instantly ramp down into auto, and stay there.
Power cycled a few times, the button assigned to fan modes works as intended and can cycle through the autos, min and max.

I could get used to this.

tl;dr Unsure exactly what plugging a Fujinon B4 ENG lens into my F35 did to its system, but it fixed my 'Max Fan' issue for now. We'll see if it stays this way.

Very interesting!

You are the third person to bring up this issue so it could be very important as our cameras get close to 10 years old.

I bought F35 with the same issue and will test your finding. It kind of makes sense the mb board “motherboard” as I call it, connects the fans and lens port so perhaps it caused some sort of reset. I’m also curious if removing the cmos battery would do similar reset.

Also did your camera continue to work properly after removing B4 lens?

Fingers crossed it stays that way and I agree with that thought, something set off some kind of reset or switch into a different mode, since usually those servos are controlled from an external board. Yep; power cycled with and without lens cable attached(the lens itself is on the optical adapter which has no connections), and currently it seems fixed for now.

Yeah, it's not a deal breaking bug by any means but it was definitely a very welcome surprise to see it go away. As far as setup goes, it was powered from the IF box, power switch set to CA, and hooked into my O7q via dual sdi out the IF box.

I had the max fan issue once, in India, when one of the buttons on the side of the camera body had slipped out of place and fallen back into the body itself.

I fixed the button, put the camera back together and then had the max fan issue. After pulling the camera apart again, I discovered that there was a little ribbon cable (I forget if it was behind the front panel, or the operator-side panel) that had come a little loose. Plugged that back in properly and the problem went away.

Bad news update; I re-activated the max fan issue. Not quite sure but it might have been due to voltage drop maybe? It ramped back up at the point when the unit was sitting at 12.9V.
Occasionally now if I turn it on and mess with the preset button for fan speeds it'll ramp down and stay down for a while, but mostly turns on, and shortly after goes into max fan mode.
Various attempts included unplugging, replugging the ENG lens into the lens port and restarting in various configurations.

Is what it is I guess, at some point I'll open the unit up and check around to see if everything is properly connected like how you mention Grug.

My theory is it’s the camera “motherboard” failing to read temps from fans. The only solution that fixed the issue for me was to replace the mb-1100 board. I am hopeful I can find the failed component on the board although everything looks good.
