Midtone noise in HPX170

Hey - DM - not sure that's the best example - compression for Vimeo looks pretty bad. Even a still from that piece does not look near as good as the stills you posted.

Can you export a full rez clip in ProRes - that can be viewed both on Mac / PC now.

This is troubling - for those of you who have used the 200a - you're saying this is noisier than that on a luma level? As for chroma noise - that's something you haven't seen on either 200 / 200a?

Just trying to gauge where this camera fits in.

*edit* - also surprised that we haven't heard from Jan or Barry on this, course Jan's busy with the wobble stuff...

Barry said it's the same as the 200A. He has seniority, we'll chalk it up as Kholi is insane (which is the general consensus) and the 170 and 200A have the same image, the latter of which I'm more partial to than the former.

It is my personal opinion that the 200A exhibits noise characteristics similar to the EX-1 and Canon XHA1 and the HPX170 more along the lines of the original HVX200.

It is also my personal opinion that I'm going to regret gettin' rid of the HPX170 in more ways than one, one of which would be the new features. I'm already loving the IRIS - FOCUS switch being on the side of the camera like that. =(

Other things I'm going to miss: 16:9 Downconvert for SD televisions (why, oh WHY was this never in the Original HVX200?), User buttons mapped to the Frame Rate controls, WAVEFORM (Long, large sigh), 1/4 Indie Filter!!!! Just...

This makes me sad.

For the record, I did spend some time trying out Scene Files and I just could not find one that looked as nice as my 200A.

Well I'm not calling you insane. I think the issue is whether this is as close to the 200a as claimed or more so the 200. I know Barry did his article with a preproduction unit so how much actual testing has been done by him, or anyone with production models of both cams is still up in the air. My local rental house will let us put them side by side but that won't be until next week when I get my HPX.

I sold my A1 hoping this would be as good a cam. Was VERY impressed with Canon's low noise, especially at -3 and even -6db.

I still think it's going to take some good controlled testing with both cams to really see where the strengths/weaknesses are on the new HPX but I can see your pain - you're wanting a hybrid of both cams :)

Time will tell. I will say that unlike the EX1 / Sony, Panasonic's input into this forum is sure awesome.

I tried downloading the clip, but it's a Mac quicktime and of course my windows system can't play it - thank you for your incompatibility, Apple! Grr.

I do *not* get the noise complaint stuff though. On my 170, it's frickin' clean as compared to my old 200. I can't even test it because I got rid of the 200. I do have that "noise comparison" footage that I shot with the 200 and the preproduction 200A, but I can't compare because I didn't write down what the settings were (I assume they were detail +7 - v-detail +7 - coring -7 - cine-D, but ... if I'm wrong, it throws the whole comparison off).

But... I mean, ask Timur, we just spent three days shooting Cold Calls and staring at the LH900 monitor the whole time, and there wasn't ever any question of noise in the image. I shot a number of things with the HMC150, and the only time I remember there being noise was with DRS on. DRS can noise up the image.

So I guess that's a question - are you guys using DRS or something?

grrr this thread also doesnt display the last page! it shows 6 pages but I cant go beyond page 5 ...

some forum softw. hiccup ?

seems like a few threads are doing that - just when you think there's more to read, you're let down ;)

A lot of threads are doing that. Strange days.

As far as the noise -- I've already admitted to being insane. I see it all over the place in broad daylight or footage shot in broad daylight with stock settings and adjusted settings. To me it looks like the original 200 but if'n Barry says he's gettin' noise-free then I'm sure it's just me!

I'm going back to the 200A just to make sure. But, those who own the 170 should keep plodding away to find the proper settings.

Hah, Kholi - I think it's all in your head. What noise????

I'm seeing some in the footage. I know DM_rider had the clip of the rapper in the orange jacket but on scopes, that was all over the place almost underexposed then boosted but not at legal limits. I've seen that with a couple other posted clips too where the colors are just so off the chart, noise would be an issue with any footage.

I'm sure there's a workaround - I'm hoping if there is some noise that it's not near as bad as the HVX200 though. Was hoping we were past that era :)

Sorry, I meant to say the noise characteristics are similar to the 200. More Chroma than Luma.

for the record that clip was from Jay :)

I think everyone is just paranoid because it's a new camera. Over time, I'm sure someone will find the sweet spot and the camera will really shine.

sorry, DM - my bad.

I agree about the sweet spot. We're finding that the HPX is it's own beast. Just some time, little TLC and maybe some alcohol to get it to warm up ;)

I've already tried the alcohol, didn't work... Maybe I used too much?
