microX - flip module for Redrock Micro M2

for those who are still interested in the microX, i just got an email from Redrock saying that it will be available in about 6 weeks. They are still saying $300 - $500, but I have a little trouble believing that they haven't narrowed it down yet... So my best guess is plan on spending $500 just in time for the New Year

Okay here's a synopsis for those who haven't been following the topic

WHAT: An adapter that flips the image from 35mm depth-of-focus adapters
WHY: Image is upside down from all adapters on the market except the Letus
WHO: Redrock (called MicroX) and Cinevate

So the big deal on timing is getting the optics right. You also have to consider you're losing about 0.25 to 0.5 stops of light by using the adapter. However, it's advantageous for editing, monitoring, and anything live. Pretty much as long as you're not shooting low-light, you'll want to get on board here. The nice thing about these flip modules is that they don't exclude previous owners. So, they're not an adapter, they're a very valuable accessory. Dennis has posted some pictures on here. If the timing on the Redrock is under 2 months or so, that's impressive considering they're about to release their mattebox as well. Lots of development and what not going on. Hopefully, someone will get their hands on Redrock's adapter to post to demo videos. I haven't seen any footage as of yet. Exciting stuff here.

That's great news. I'm looking forward to see how good is it. I mean, the brevis flip system has improved their original brevis a great deal. I hope this does the same. I'm also very curious regarding compatibility with other adapters. I know it's compatible on paper, but I want to hear about some practical results.

The reason i decided against the redrock was the upside down image. I suppose this puts them in with the letus, brevis and SG now....

Does anyone have any concerns about adding more glass and reflective surfaces in the optical path by using a flip unit thereby (seemingly) degrading image quality? I mean, it seems to me to be an unavoidable side effect.

.

word on the street is that this flip will actually increase overall sharpness, and edge to edge sharpness.

Actually no, the flip module uses its own integrated achromat so you are not really adding much extra, just flipping it. It actually IMPROVES sharpness.

Because then it would degrade the "assumed" quality of the M2 by itself.

Just like Dennis was apprehensive about declaring it publically that the flip unit makes the Brevis a lot better when edges are concerned.

Then people will say "well I'm not buying this if I have to buy that. I only want the unit, not flip." And, well, you lose a sell.

--EDIT

I really don't care what anyone says, though, I experienced decent edge sharpness with my M2 from the get-go. M2 will do just fine without it and is useable in that form.

Makes me wonder why, if true, it's not used as a selling point.

.

We do talk about it as a selling point - who doesn't want more sharpness?!

The newly redesigned hard mount kits (the blue rings) have built-in 360 degree adjustments to center the camera (especially helpful to HVX owners with ccd block mis-aligns)

details are pics of the upgrade kit are here:

Price for the microX upgrade kit (includes a bunch of stuff) is $345 for M2 customers and $445 for non-M2 customers.

oh and it's shipping now :)

ryvac: we have started a policy of making our tutorials and education available publicly. our channel on vimeo is http://www.vimeo.com/redrockmicro

That is an offiical redrock post to our redrock channel.

Redrock Micro X

Redrock Micro X

Got mine today! 30 min to setup on HVX200. All I can say is its the bomb!!!! Major upgrade for the adapter and well made. I have been a Redrock user from day 1 since they have started and man if you own a RR 35 adapter you need this bad boy, Edge to edge softness gone and the detail is very good. Redrock has there stuff down for the indy film makers. I suggest if you are intrested in a solid 35 adapter this is the one not only for the price but for the quality.

To Kholi's point - I am almost certain that those folks who have major trouble with edge-to-edge with the M2 are just not setting it up correctly. I have never seen problems with my M2 unit that are any worse than Letus, Brevis, or SGPro.

That said, I can't wait to get my microX as there is always some room for improvement. This unit has been a long time coming, but I believe that it benefits from being the last of the big four to release its flip accessory.
