i can't edit my previous post.. so excusez-moi the next post.. amis françaises.. mais it isn't toujours that we are champions of the most important worldwide sport competition..

edit

i'm sorry my american friends but about baseball or NBA or even that strange american sport called american football (!!), the world is not only america..

"your" soccer is the most important worldwide sport competition and the others are peanuts.. :cheesy:

I don't get why america chooses to ignore futbol. It is the world's game, but because it's not "american", we don't care. Yes, we have a team, yes, we root for them .... but we don't spend nearly enough money to be competitive.

In all sports but basketball, we modified other games to make them "our own" ... i'm surprised we don't play soccer by different rules.

I wouldn't call the other sports "peanuts" ... they have produced some of the best athletes alive, I just wish the USA would get as excited about soccer as the rest of the world.

The MLS isn't going to work cause they are trying to mold soccer into the same format as football. Seriously America, put together a couple of North American Squads and send them to play the big boys in Europe.

We could be "Microsoft United".:zombie_smiley:

hvpz or D and G, what are you thinking about the Zizoo's headbutting now?

I thought it was disgraceful. Not to mention that it possibly lost the game for France (Zizoo being a premier penalty taker). I have no clue what could have possessed a professonal like Zizoo to do that... he's heard it all on the pitch.

In the end, I think the right team won. Italy impressed me with their mix of balanced defense and occasional striking.

I just hope that they clean up their league (and send Juventus to the minors).

But for now, congrats Italia!, you overcame the scandal at home, played a good mixed game, and took home the cup.
Zizzo's going to have to deal with the French public, who are almost as demanding as the English fans
(ps -I heard he was crying in the dressing room during the penalties)

Cheers.

I'm not sure Italia had been the best team...

My vote is for the portuguese team and I'm not alone:

Well, I meant "best team" between Italy and France, but how do you explain Portugals 3-1 loss to Germany? No doubt, they are a very talented (and entertaining) team, but I still felt there were a few teams who were playing better and had a similar field of talent to choose from. Maybe if the Brazil players had some of Portugal passion, they would have been in the final? :)

Either way, it was a pretty good World Cup. We'll see if Portugal can keep up their rankings on the international stage. They certainly have a good shot at it.

about the headbutting, i think you have been unfair with the french..

first, they aren't pure french..

second, it's easy to win or to be strong with a world team as the french.. only three among the eleven were european..

third, you're talking about the french team as the magic team.. but the magic one has been others like the portuguese team.. again Portugal was out from an important competion by the same hands than before.. seeing Michel Platini as spectator it's easy to figure or even figure out what he's doing when he's talking with the FIFA personnel.. vive Michel Platini!.. or if you prefer Viva Italia!.. a 100% native team!.. "pour la verité sportive" or if you wish speaking about the "fair play"! so, please, don't announce this as an exclusive french when it isn't.. on the contrary.

My dear D_and_G (BTW, what's your real name? If I know for some time that you have a brazilian girlfriend perhaps I must be know now how to call you properly)

The portuguese international or FIFA ranking isn't new. However, below the real potentialities of our soccer, that's for sure!

I'm also glad for this world prestige from the people in general, specially when we are winning this FIFA/public award (linked before) anonymously. As filmmaker1977 posted, without Michel Platinis...

About the 3-1:

As portuguese, I know very well as our mind works. The psychological effect is relevant and it works. Our national song is the Fado -- did you hear or read something about it? I invite you to visit my country or to read Pessoa (Fernando Pessoa) and maybe you can understand some of the strange feelings of your girlfriend if she has it... Special feellings... Not-easy-understandable from an exclusive anglo POV  Maybe not, as brazilian... :)

Did you know the Portugal-Germany match (Euro Cup 2000) ? Portugal won 3-0 with 3 goals from Sérgio Conceição, a great player that Scolari (coach) refused now. Besides the high quality of the portuguese team -- technical one, he played like the Germans. But if you didn't watch it, I can assure you that portuguese performance was quite superior comparing with the saturday's match. Including the german team. Or both together if you prefer. And that was the B team (Portugal was qualified for the last 16 where arrived to the semifinals losing the last match against France -- again).

There are several soccer modes. Two different schools. And the german is more muscle and efficient indeed! But it doesn't mean the best in terms of technical performance. Saturday? Maybe yes maybe not. That's why it's interesting this award or this international poll from real people. It means a lot.

Maybe the US has no deep roots in "soccer" or its true name Futbol because
the US is SO commercially based. If the media companies can't make money then GOODBYE, no support.

In futbol there are NO commercial breaks only at halftime or inbetween overtime extensions -- even when there's a penalty the clock is ticking.

In all other countries around the world media companies whether public or private EAT the ad revenue and instead op for unity of their citizens.

That's the big difference between the US and all others. The corporate lobbing here is out of freaking control.

Hi Emanuel, it's easier to go by D&G because I share the account with my producing partner. But anyway, I can see you are passionate about football

You definately sound knowledgeable. I've played awhile back, and started watching more international matches a couple of years ago, but definately aren't an expert :)

I've heard of the Fado, but I am not too familiar with Portugals culture (beyond the obvious). I am planning to take a trip to Brazil, so my girlfriend can introduce me to the "real" Brazil (when business permits).

As far as the technical details of the 3-1 match, all I can go on is my impressions. Portugal played well, but Germany played their kind of game better, IMHO. You're right that the final score only tells half the tale of the game, though...

Ps - Nelly Furtado. She's a hot Canadian-Portugese  So you seem to have a wealth of beautiful women and good football players.

And Canada has only qualified once for the World Cup...

RED# wish I was higher

:dankk2: for your kind words...

The portuguese are an unique people surrounded by the Atlantic and Spain or Europe if you wish... Where the continent begins... It makes a psychological mix.

Nelly is luso-canadian (luso = portuguese) -- it's true. And a pretty girl, indeed! The football is other of our skills besides the poetry, the music and the soul.

There is a large portuguese community in Canada and all the luso-canadians that I know they are announcing their love for your beloved country. Maybe once a Canada team from portuguese & french mix origin (since there are french roots too) can be so good as the portuguese football players are & the french luck is, actually. And the europeans -- portuguese & french together may understand its significance. Cheers to that!

At least to me, Portugal was the best team. The FIFA website choice isn't a surprise. Even if the voters were coming from outside and not from the portuguese supporters. Above all, when we are knowing they are 15,000 million people. Or 200,000 portuguese speakers. Nevertheless, the majority had Brazil there. And I know brazilian people that were supporting the portuguese team even before the match against France. And there is who is saying those players aren't at their best. Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maniche, Deco, Miguel, Carvalho, Meira and the keeper Ricardo (with Buffon) would be at my favorite dream team.

It though it was shameful that a guy who is so gifted did that. Totally unforgivable.
And a very bad example with 3 billions of witnesses...

And may be if we were 11 instead 10 we can beat the Italians before the penalties.

But this is a never ending story : France vs Italia - September '06 for Euro qualifications.

pffft at Italy. France and Italy played the most boring style of football the whole competition and without Zidanes headbutt you could have called it a qualifier with the complete lack of interest. Italy are surprise winners but good luck to them... pitty they had to take a fall to get a penalty in the last 10 seconds against Aus but thats football. Portugal played a great tournament but just lacked the last pieces to get over the line.

This world cup will undoubtedly go down as one of the worst referreed in the last 30 years. CHEERS REF.
