I am a new DVX100A user and I may have just missed the answer to this question amidst all of the other info that I have read in recent days.
Is it possible to shut off the built-in camera microphone and use only an external microphone? If so, how? Thanks!

RTFM !!! (Read the Fxxxx Manual)

Flip open your LCD panel. Look for two slide switches labelled CH 1 SELECT and CH 2 SELECT respectively. Move CH 1 switch from INT(L) to Input 1 and switch CH 2 from INT(R) to Input 2.

That makes the DVX100A want to get its audio from the XLR inputs on the other side of the camera rather than the internal microphones. INT is short for internal.

What you plug into your XLRs will determine how other audio related switches on the outside of the camera are positioned as well as a few internal menu settings are configured.

For example: I don't do ENG work so I have no requirement to bolt mics onto the camera body. All my mics go through a mixer, (even though a lot of the boom work is single mic I will still only go through a proper field mixer), which supplies any necessary phantom power to those mics which require it. So My Input 1 and Input 2 switches on the front of the camera are always set to Line and the Mic Power switches for Input 1 and Input 2 back on the side of the camera are always set to Off. The mixer also has its own limiters so the ALC internal menu setting is Off.
