Microphone setup

I have just purchased a RODE NTG2. I have connected it to Input 2. How do I turn off the inbuilt mic so that only the Rode is in operation. I am trying to silence all ambient sound so that the RODE picks up sound from 180 degrees ahead. Also any other suggestions as to how to isolate sound so that pick up is only directly in front of the camera and in a narrow band.

Check out the manual or google rode ntg2 for the exact pickup pattern of your microphone. It is constructed to reduce lateral sound and noise pickup, but, beside the desired frontal, it has a significant pickup field behind the mic. There are many useful tips around on how to get the best results. Do you record interviews? If it is not run n gun / one man type of shooting, best way might be to use boom or lavs.
