Micro35 - M2 First Test Footage

Thanks for posting the side by side resolution chart shots. This basically confirms the suspicion that the resolution is suffering. The left side of the chart show about 475 line resolution where the right side is about 325 line.

looks soft... or is it just me?

It is soft.

There is another issue I have noticed, but will run a few tests to make sure its not me and the M2. This issue would also have bearing on amount of ghosting we are seeing.

How did you read the chart? I could swear I see lines in the 400's with the adapter on. To me t is more like a 475-500 without and 400-425 with it...

Another thing, there seems to be a LOT of grain in your side by side, more than in your screen captures from the footage. Did you do that shot with the GG spinning or static?

Thanks for the chart, it surprises me nobody did that before!

Resolution charts are subject to interpretation, but here is a clip of the section where I made my call.

It could be 350 +/- 50 lines of uncertainty, depends upon your criteria. I would recommend bringing in the image and looking at it with Photoshop or a similar program, zoom in and look where the parallel lines are no longer unique and begin to merge. Regardless, there is a noticeable loss of resolution and that is what is important.

I'm sure I had it switched on, but now you make me want to go and do another test to make absolutely sure.

One reason I have no problem doing things like side by side chart tests is I have nothing to sell or any particular point of view yet on this product. I just want to see for myself. I will likely try a G35 when its comes out as well.

Taylor Moore also just got his M2 and I think having two units to test on different cameras with different lenses will give us a better data set.

Thanks for doing this. Its nice to see an objective approach taken. Certainly a better way than a purely subjective one.

Ah, alright, I just wanted to check maybe I was using a different method. As long as we remain consistent in reading both sides I guess we'll be ok.

There is definately loss of resolution, you're right. In your estimates there is a 25% resolution loss, and in mine there is a 20%. I'm just trying to put this in perspective, since Barry Green wrote that the DVX has around 500 lines of resolution, so I kinda saw where it was in the chart and bought it.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this adapter would be a bad choice for anyhing larger than a good SD Television.

Cheers!

How does everyone/anyone feel about the letus35?? They claim a vibrating GG, which I wonder if there'd be any noticable vibration in the camera/image, but I can't imagine there would be or no one would want it.

Thoughts?

I have yet to see any of the adapters hold up to anything larger. The moment that I meet one that is good enough for film out or large screen projection, I will change my mind. Somehow, this pursuit of really shallow DOF from a small sensor camera seems to be asking for more than is reasonable. At some point, you are trading off one aspect of performance for another.

I could be proven wrong, and really I hope that I am, because if the HVX does all that it appears that it can and if someone comes up with a really high resolution adapter, then watch out, because the price of theatrical quality productions is going to drop. I for one am still waiting to see the combination that gets there.
