Micro Gimbal for GH4, BMPCC, A7s - $699 USD

The full zoom range of the RX10 is not useable of course, the lens weight gets too far out in front for the Nebula 4000. If you want a closeup, just turn off the gimbal, grab the camera normally and get the shot.

dustylense, I am very interested it your experiences with PID program and their software.

Were you able to download the software from the link I posted?

It seems that the Nebula 4000 comes tuned for larger cameras but I am interested in using it with the GM1 + 12mm F2.0 prime which is a pretty light combo. I think that I will need to tweak the PID settings to make it work well ... Mine nebula should be shipping next week.

Haven't played with the PID yet. I did get the DL though. Thanks.

Edit. Getting into the PID settings now.

They just sent this message out to previous buyers. Not sure of the import of the message, but wanted to mention to note that they are involved with their customers. I have beef with Sony that they don't keep track of their customers by camera and don't send out camera specific notices, about updates, issues, etc. Sony consumer division is on the ropes, Sony could improve business by exerting that small effort for someone who buys their $10K camera..

Yeah, I figured out the code before the e-mail, but it's a good sign that they in fact told customers.

So, I've gotten into the PID's and have greatly improved the performance from the video I posted. Still though, the inability to fine tune the pan axis is a design flaw. I'm trying to get a nice profile for the Gh4 with 12-35 and I'm zeroing in with the software. Noting I can really do getting an optimum pan balance though. At least the motor on the pan is a bit larger.

I think if they designed a Nebula 4050 and redesigned the pan adjustment to where you could fine tune it by the millimeter and put some slightly larger motors on it (even if the device had to grow 10%) they would a a real winner.

Thinking about getting a lighter 12mm for the gh4 so I can improve the pan balance with being able to center the gravity of the payload. Still though, with the way they designed that adjustment not sure it will ever be perfect. All in all the gimbal does perform quite nice.

I really like the easy micro adjustment possible on Chinese made Micro slider devices like this. The fore and aft adjustment when putting the camera on the Nebula 4000 is really hard to zero in on, one grunt and it's noseheavy, another grunt in the opposite direction and its body heavy, but not a deal breaker.

Here is some footage using the 12-35 on the Gh4 (at 12mm) with the PID's adjusted. Basically I have the thing working really well in follow mode. This is without any camera or post stabilization at all. With this set up the pan balance will never be properly adjusted. Looking at getting a light 12mm for the Gh4 and a light pancake for the A7s to see if I can get a better pan balance. But with the way the pan balance adjustment is designed I'm not sure if either camera will ever have a proper pan balance. But even so, after some PID software tuning I'm getting results that I'm very pleased with. The up and down movement is now limited to how well I hold the device. And being a one handed gimbal that is quite light, it's pretty darn hard to eliminate that completely. I might try and mount the gimbal on my light steadicam so that the steadicams gimbal might further reduce any up and downs...

Get rid of the beeps when you turn it on, and when you change modes. Really way too loud to begin with, and an LED blinking would suffice. I think this thing also beeps quite a bit when the battery gets low. It just started beeping after quite a bit of use. In any case you don't need the distraction of loud beeps alerting someone across the room in many situations. Makes it unuseable in many situations, you have to turn it off quite a bit and to turn it on once a ceremony or something quiet begins, that won't work. I turn it off a lot to conserve the battery, to lay it down to tend to another piece of equipment, or to manually grab the camera and do a shot that can't be done with the gimbal turned on.

Shot all day with it on a job. Certainly happy to have it, but you are going to need an external monitor for anything important, to do anything besides rough framing (i.e. judge exposure). Just not enough holes to see through! I will really learn to appreciate light lenses now that I have this gimbal, I would have like to have been able to tilt down more than I was able with the RX10 before the gimbal flinched.

If you can't tilt down you need to enter into the PID and up the motors on the tilt. If you look at the video I posted above at 2:16 you will see a sweep move I did after PID adjustment.

This video will give you some basics about tuning the PID's:

Admittedly I'm one of these people in hell wanting ice water but realistic enough to understand that Jagger was right when he said, "you can't always get what you want." At the price I should just pony up and place a preorder but I'm thinking if they're listening to their customer base they might make a couple minor yet critical changes in a version 1.1

All I'm saying is I think a little bit larger space for adjustments and perhaps a more intelligent approach to tighten the screws on balance adjustment (if that's even possible) would go along way with me. I'm not looking for beefier gimbals because that would impact the price structure significantly and perhaps change the product such that it becomes something else entirely.

Kudos to you DL and others for testing (spending your money), and sharing the findings . . . I love this place!

Agreed. I expect there are many of us lurking, very curious to see developments in this space (lightweight gimbal, low cost, sweet results). Thanks for your efforts guys.

You can turn alerts off in the software.

Done, beeps are gone, here is the tip they provided. I downloaded the software, luckily I had the USB cable needed, and windows 7 automatically found the driver needed to make the connection.
