I am looking at a used lens which is a 18-180 and the seller says it is only a 4/3 lens. what is the difference with a micro 4/3 or just 4/3?

4/3 is an older format with a deeper flange distance. Many of the lenses work fine on m4/3 bodies but require an adapter. Both Panasonic & Olympus offer fully functional adapters.

Autofocus is typically not great on these setups, but if this doesn't effect your work there's many fine 4/3 lenses. Though I rarely use them anymore I've been unable to part with Olympus' 14-35mm f/2 & the Panasonic Leica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5

4/3 is an older Olympus format that used the 4/3 smaller sensor, but still had a mirror box in camera. Micro 4/3 removed the mirror. The issue is a longer flange focus distance on the older lenses which cannot be used directly with a m4/3 camera, but with the use of an adapter, can be mounted. The issue then becomes of electronic communication between lens and body, which as far as I know will only work on Olympus cameras with their recently released dedicated adapter.

I think the main difference is 4/3 lenses are for the older Olympus DSLR's and micro 4/3 lenses are the newer mirror less digital camera's. You can still buy the lens but you'll also have buy an adapter with pass through electronics. I think they go for around $100.00.
