Mick's 2016 NAB Odyssey

Stephen Mick

Totally Usable
So I'm here at NAB once again, with the mission to "give the people what they want." You tell me what you want to see, and I drag-ass across millions of square feet looking for it.

Post what you want me to find in this thread, and I'll do my best to track it down.

Yes... I'm your NAB show ***** again. Let's do this!

Kinefinity TERRA

Is the 1080p monitor output full quality or aliasy and low quality? How much more power consumption is 1080p output than 720p?
Can it downscale to record oversampled ProRes in camera?
Can it bake LUTS?
Does it still have "Golden" modes for binned RAW?
Is the new 5k sensor better than the 6k? Why are the DR specs sometimes higher for 6k and sometimes lower?
Any AF support?
Any tech support in the US?
What's the deal with the different gain and EI modes?
does the 5k sensor have improved rolling shutter vs the 6k? is the 5k global shutter option working on their 5k prototype?
Is it awesome?

I heard that Craft Camera doesn't have a booth, but if they do, could you try to find out when they'll have footage available?

I'm also interested in the Kinefinity Terra.

Matthew Allard at Newsshooter said the rolling shutter is pretty bad. Kinefinity had said the Terra would have a global shutter option, but no mention from Matthew about this.

Is global shutter still coming, or are they pulling a Black Magic trick?

Thanks Stephen!!

The new Blackmagic Video Assist 4K looks intriguing at only $899. Can you find out if it can record in DCI 4K or is it just UHD 4K? Also, what's the build quality like?

Thanks for being NAB ***** again!

Can you go to Came-TV Booth and Find out about the Came-Optimus and When will it be available? and see if you can make a movie clip of the Came -Accordian jib.

but the bad rolling shutter is in the 6k, which is the same as the kinemax 6k which also has kinda bad rolling shutter. the new 5k with the new sensor may have better rolling shuttter and DR (15 vs 14 stops spec). The 5k is also the one with the global shutter option and maybe Mick can check out the global shutter option on the prototype they have on the floor. Hopefully they have the 5k prototype at the show, not just the 6k...

...and also whether or not it has a similar green cast that is present in the current 5" VA?

Thanks!

discount codes for wooden camera please and any pictures you can post from the big dogs booths, (Arri, Red, Mole Richardson, BMD, and so on!)

So here's what I can tell you...

Not much. I spent twenty minutes at the Kinefinity booth waiting for the ONE person there who could speak English (to be fair, there were two people total, but I don't speak Mandarin), then gave up and left. I'll try again tomorrow.

But I'd say that if getting ANY kind of support is an issue for you, look elsewhere. I was impressed by the design (they should send RED a thank-you note), and the build quality, but if their booth is any indication of the support you'd get as a customer, I'd move on.

According to the person I spoke with, it's UHD 4K only. No DCI. The build quality is nice, about as expected given the price point. The Video Devices recorders feel much more hearty, with more metal, but if you take good care of the Blackmagic, it should be fine.

According to my contact at CAME-TV, the Optimus should be shipping "soon," which sounded like sometime in May. And I've got some photos of the Accordion Jib...
