MichaelP, please help with Avid Express Pro HD 5.0 problem

hello, it was my understanding from a lot of posts on here that express pro HD 5.0 could output 24pa footage over firewire to a deck/camera/external monitor without a mojo. I am trying to get playback to work like this but i can only hear my clips, all i see is a black screen. I am reading the avid help files and it tells me to change my "digital cut" output mode but the program won't let me do that. What do i do to get this to work? Thank you

I wish I actually knew how to get Digital Cut to work over here. I however have the mojo so I cant be of much help. What I do is actually just play the timeline and it goes back through the firewire cable that way and I capture to tape with the deck, but, I am connected to the mojo and never tried it without the mojo connected. I actually heard it wasn't possible without the mojo but that was just at www.grapevine.com (j/k) so I dont actually know.

It is possible to output 24pa footage over firewire natively (I.E. no Mojo) with Xpress Pro HD. However, I've read this post a number of times and am confused on the specifics. Korhan20, are you using the Digital Cut tool? Or are you just wanting it to play your timeline out via firewire? Also, let's start troubleshooting at the most basic, what are you system specs?

Thanks.

Chris

My goal is to play my timeline out via firewire. My system specs are as follows:

Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
2 Gigs of crucial ram
Abit VT7 motherboard
200GB Internal 7200rpm Maxtor Hard Drive
1TB External LaCie Bigger Disk Firewire800/400/Usb2.0 hard drive
Running Windows XP Pro SP2, Avid Express Pro HD 5.0

Early on i had some hardware issues while capturing my footage, but it was a firewire800 card problem i think. Now i just connect to the LaCie with USB2.0 and the capturing worked out fine. But i really want this 24pa footage timeline to be outputed via firewire. Thanks

Ah. Well, that solves it. To play your timeline out you do need a Mojo. To go to tape with the digital cut tool, you can do it software only. A painful workaround is to open the Digital Cut tool and click the Preview button. This will get 24pa footage through Firewire to a monitor or whatever, but it's not as handy as having native timeline out support.

There is native output. I am not in front of a system right now, but I believe the capture settings has a tab to use the software DV codec which enables the ouptut in real time.

I'm excited to be wrong on this one. Michael, I'm looking forward to learning how to turn this option on!

if the footage was captured w/out that dv codec function checked will it still work? Because i just checked that box in my capture settings and tried playing the timeline out via firewire and still no dice.

What would cause me to be unable to go into Green/green mode? The highest I can choose is Yellow/Green.

Are you working in DV25? I am on the road traveling, so I can't take a look at the interface to tell you what the settings are. Usually the inability to go to green/green mode is because you are working 1:1 resolution without a Mojo.

Michael

When you get back home and in are in front of an interface, could you please give some directions on the configuration settings to get this output to work? Thank you very very much.

Korhan20, this worked for me on one of my Avids:

I did not need to check the Software DV Codec in the Capture settings. All I needed to do was switch the quality mode to green/green (the icon is at the bottom of the timeline). And then in the Video Display Settings I could then check Output to DV device. Then I was sending 24pa footage from my timeline over firewire. Super cool!

MichaelP, on my other Avid (and unfortunatly the more powerful one and the more often used one) I cannot select Green/Green mode. It's a 23.976 project with 24pa footage captured with Advanced Pulldown. The media reads that it is indeed DV25P 411 footage. There's no other type of media in my project. But Yellow/Green and Yellow/Yellow is all I can get. Any ideas? I know you're traveling, so just address this whenever you have time. I've lived without realtime output for this long. :)

Thanks as always.

Chris

Doh! Figured it out. Even though it was plugged in an powered on, Windows had lost my DV Device. Unplugged the cabled, plugged it back in and now I can get Green/Green. If Avid can't see a DV Device then it doesn't give you the Green/Green option.

Learn from my mistakes. :)
