MichaelP lease help

Have checked with so many different forums and asked so many different people this question, and have not gotten a helpful answer yet... I will go step by step so maybe you can see where I am going wrong. I capture all my footage via firewire into avid. I edit my sequences then export the sequence as a qt reference (this should be lossless, correct?) I import the qt reference into sorenson squeeze 4, and customize a DVD_Large_NTSC so my bitrate is higher (ie 8000), I click off de interlace. My audio and video are then compressed and encoded to .mpv. I take this file to author in Ulead's DVD Workshop2. It then seems as though DVD Workshop then encodes the files again when I am trying to burn it to DVD. I use highest quality settings all the way through. My final output is decent but nowhere near some of the other footage I ahve seen burned to DVD from even inferior software. I know I can get more beautiful footage from My DVDs I just don't know where I am going wrong. Too many steps. DVD Workshop2 has its own transcoder should I just send the footage directly to it? What would the point of having Sorenson squeeze even be at this point? Any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

Re: MichaelP lease help

Can you verify the quality of the files Sorensen is giving you? If you can, then you'll have a better idea of where in the workflow the quality issue arises.

Re: MichaelP lease help

If you feel the quality of the encoder in your authoring system is of suficient quality and can encode 2:3 pulldown flags (if working in native 23.976) and 16:9 anamorphic flags (if working in 1:9) yo umay want to consider doing that. If the authoring application supports QuickTime as a source file, your workflow would be to export a QUickTime reference movie (with "mastering" settings on) and then open that QT movie in the authoring application for authoring and encoding.

You certainly do not want to have a double encoding process done since it will affect the quality as you have seen. Are you creating MPEG2 transport streams or elementary streams in Sorenson? Your authoring application may be making assumptions based on that as to whether to re-encode or not.

Re: MichaelP lease help

Later today when I am in front of my computer at home, I will take a look at that- that is a good point. What is meant by elementary streams?

Re: MichaelP lease help

Elementary streams creates a separate file for the audio and one for the video and they are comnined in the authoring application. This way multiple language tracks can be handled etc.

Re: MichaelP lease help

So should I or should I not have it in elementary streams to have it ready for burn in the authoring program, rather than it thinking it has to encode the files again?

Re: MichaelP lease help

That is what I don't know. This is somehting you need to check with your authroing system and the user guide. I use Sonic Solutions and it supports elementary streams and does not re-encode... check your manual...

Re: MichaelP lease help

Michael...thanks for your help. I got it figured out. There is a setting that can be switched off so that it does not encode it again. One last questions...When in progressive mode, if I do I shot in slow motion (say 50%), it gets really pixely on the edges, is there a way to smooth this out?

Re: MichaelP lease help

YOu can try some of the FluidMotion presets or if you have Boris plug-ins, try the OpticalFlow for creating slomo.

Also, if you can plan ahead, if you shoot the DVX100 as 30p, you can capture this in a 23.976p project with the "no pulldown" setting to create a very smooth 25% slomo just by playing it back.
