Michael Bay is awesome.

let's be logical, scarecrow knows what he's talking about.. i'm with you man..

john, welcome again.. glad to see you again.. this time, don't escape again.. :D

I just dont liek the flashy camera tricks Bay uses. its beautiful sometimnes, but sometimes i feel like he does it in places where its unnecessary of actually distracting and getting inthe way of seeing whats happeneing.

Well, I'm going to have to agree that Michael Bay pretty much sux. Somehow, I kinda liked The Rock, in spite of MB AND in spite of Mr. Over-the-Top (Nicholas Cage). The 1st half of The Island wasn't too bad, except that it seemed like a lot of movies I've seen before. Then it degenerated into "let's see how much of L.A. we can blow up while making our 'actors' look totally rediculous."

:D

And he knows what he is talking about....why?

He is railing about some really really successful film makers. Movies are a suspension of belief.
I happened to like BB one and parts of BB 2. Lucas shoved the industry forward about a millenium and a half with star wars and the technology.... and this is bad How? And scarecrow could do better..... how?

The only reason why people think commerical directors suck is because we ourselves suck. They're commercial cuz they give people what they want: Guns, Girls, and a whole lot of glitz.

So that means if we don't have girls, guns and glitz in our fiilms that we suck as filmmakers. LOL

Sorry if some of us strive for stronger more meaningful subtext in our pictures. I make films for myself not for what "people" want to see.

Bay has his own style

Something tells me he'd still hit a home run using a 16mm camera and some bounceboard
I don't feel he's hit one yet. A double, maybe, but no homeruns.

I'm sort of a closet fan of Michael Bay. I find his movies fun and entertaining. Putting him down for not having "substance" strikes me as a little bit pretentious.

I've worked with Bay. Most recently on Transformers. I drove him and the remote camera operators in a van in the major stunt scene on a freeway outside of L.A. The guy knows cameras and knows what he wants. He may not be the "ultimate" filmmaker in everybodys eyes nor the most pleasant person to be around, but he is good at what he does and that is making movies and making money for the studio. Ergo, he will continue to get the budgets and the latitude to do what he wants, when he wants. And BTW who among us wouldn't want that?

I'm not putting him down for a lack of substance. I can watch a popcorn movie as well as then next guy. For me, though, I'd have to lump Michael Bay in with Uwe Boll.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just don't find his movies very entertaining. I've bought a couple, seen most of the others on HBO-type channels but based on what I've seen, I won't be buying any more nor paying to see one of his movies. I don't even get the attraction of Transformers.

Michael Bay is certainly successful and he has to be given credit for that. What many enjoy in his movies, I consider to be going overboard. To me, he's always taking it that one (or two or three or four) step too far. I'm obviously not his intended market and I'm sure he's not losing any sleep over my opinion. Would I rather watch a Michael Bay movie or a Jim Jarmusch movie? Given that choice, if that was all there was, yeah, I'd take Bay everytime. But having lots of other choices, I'm don't have to watch either one of them.

on that, no argue.. but on that other quote.. "Movies are a suspension of belief", i dunno what i can add w/out hurting some feelings..

The guy isn't held to too many high standards

Does he know how to direct and will he make me a shi*load of money ?

Yes

Am I calling him to make the $15,000,000 dollar budgeted Cop Land ?

No way.

He has made 6 films with total grosses of $774,000,000

I think we have seen the real Michael Bay. I stopped expecting him to do something with real soul awhile ago and next we get Transformers. Some filmmakers care about saying something and being remembered; they want to leave an impact and they'll dare to fail; take chances.

Some want to blow things up.

Well put... his most thought provoking film has been The Island... and that isn't saying much, IMO.

People who only like substance, story, character arcs, and intelligent movies... don't like blow 'em up movies.

People who only like sex, drugs, fights, explosions, and movies where they don't have to think too much... don't like slow dramatic movies.

It's easy to go around and say someone sucks. Especially in any industry that involves art, any art form, because it is so damn subjective.

Someone who loves Picasso could say Da Vinci sucks. Someone who loves Da Vinic could say Picasso sucks. Someone who loves David Lean, Kar Wai Wong, or Mike Nichols could turn around and say that Michael Bay, George Lucas, or James Cameron sucks and just as equally the people that love Michael Bay and others could say the same about the previously stated film makers.

Personally, I have a hard time finding a film maker or a movie for that matter that I dislike. If I take a movie for what it is, they would really need to screw it up for me to say they suck. The fact that they are even making a movie, I have to all ready give them a little credit and a little respect because I know how much work goes into even the simplest of movies.

Saying that, the only film maker that I think sucks, is myself. I think all my work could be a lot better and I hope that every project I do will get better. I rather spend the time making my stuff better then worry about what other people are doing.

In twenty years, when I'm making films that are commercially successful, I can't wait for someone to say my movies suck (and to have a whole thread dedicated to it)... that day I will know I have made it big.
