Michael Bay is awesome.

At least they are directing big budget movies and making a living directing. That's more than anyone else on this site can say I would imagine ;).

I wasn't saying they were good, only that they managed to get jobs directing big time movies while most (if not all) of us have not ;).

You are absolutely right. Now I started a thread in the After Effects forum. Would you be a buddy and respond to it if you can?

An interesting thread; and I'll bite; but come on Piffer; at least say why you think these guys suck.

Michael Bay

Bad Boys
Never liked this film; not my thing and the Will Smith thing was old the minute this film came out although Tea was looking kind of slinky in it.

The Rock
Thought is was okay; it was good to see Cage in his first 'Big Action Role'. Something I think he does well in. Cage also has a nice knack for doing 'Hollywood' movie and then 'Indie style' movie; nice career choices.

Armageddon
I liked this film; pure escapist entertainment. Great cast. It was funny and a fun ride. Sides, how can you not like Meteors and Comets hurtling towards earth?

Pearl Harbor
I liked this as well; purely for escapist entertainment. But, it would have been better if this film was taken serioulsy ala SPR. It was a gutless portrayl of the Japanese during this period and it could have been a serious war film. Instead? Just grab the popcorn.

Bad Boys II
Didn't like the first one; didn't like this one.

The Island
I am looking forward to this as it's just a subject matter I dig. It'll be a popcorn flcik.

I do not like or dislike M BAY. I do however either like or dislike his films. It would nice if he did take one seriously just once; something that has some weight to it.

George Lucas

What can I say? Props for creating the world of Star Wars. The first two films which just kick ass and the rest spiraling downwards like a bad dream with the introduction of the EWOK. Props for American Grafitti. Other than that? Yeah, I think he sucks too. Guy gets far too much credit for Indiana Jones as well.

James Cameron

I love Cameron. How can you say he sucks? Have you ZERO taste? This is the man who brought us The Terminator; one of the best Sci-Fi films ever made, Aliens; way better than the first one and the only one that kicks ass, The Abyss; truly an underrated film, Titanic; say what you will but a hugely succesful film and part history lesson, part romance, part popcorn, part adventure. True Lies was too campy for me; T2 was fun but lacked the grittiness of the original and lately? Who knows what he's been doing? All of these expedition and oceanographic films? Kind of a let-down since Titanic but let's be real here.

Jerry Bruckheimer

This guy kicks ass. First of all he is a Producer. And a widely succesful one at that. What's to hate? The guy makes money making films. And an impressive list of films.

John Hudson for the win!

Yeah, tell us why you don't like them. Possibly a bit of jealousy at their success? Did they turn down your movie scripts or something? We need answers! lol

If George Lucas sucks at Directing and film.....I hope to one day be the worst filmmaker the world has ever seen!!

Honestly, if you read up on Lucas you would see as important was his role in bringing film to a different level creatively....he probably more importantly took his money once he established himself and put it back into what he loved to do to help push the medium. Looking at our editing systems and software now you take for granted what we have now...but he believed it was obtainable even before it was created and invested in technology. I'm not saying that he solely is responsible for everything we now use but he contributed immensely.

I know I had always wanted to be part of film years ago but not until the digital age really came about did I ever think it would be possible for me due to the expense.

Today, just about any tool needed is available for a modest price.....your more limited by your abillity and imagination now than you are your equipment!!

Despite his Ewoks...which my daughter loves....I think he's a class act!

Here's a link to a small article on Lucas...check it out:

George Lucas is a genius producer.

But as a director, he sucks. So does Michael Bay. So does James Cameron.

well, ....that is your opinion....I do feel there's moments where I think he could have captured a better performances from his actors...but overall I think he's content with getting his main story across.

I really do like the shots that James Cameron has filmed. Honestly, I would love to work on anything either one of them were involve in!

Peter Jackson I think is awesome!! ....there is a lot of talent out there. Some big names and some unheard of that deserve the exposure.

Bottom line, ...film making, music, art whatever the medium....it all comes down to personal preference. It's rare when one person's vision and art come together into something that really connects with a mass audience.

I think all of the people you have mentioned have actually done that....so on a large scale, they have made that connection whether or not that was there main goal.

You may have something to offer or vision you feel people should see....and hopefully you will capture it the way you intend.

Glad to see Piffer enlighten us with his "opinion".

Next time throw this type of thread in the Cafe ala DvX instead please.

As for your opinions... well without any explaination as to why you feel this way, I can't really get an understanding for your statements.

To pick on 4 of the most financially successful people to ever be part of the industry... I'd venture to say jealousy plays more into your statements than substance, plus you may be 10 years old for all i know.

I will somewhat agree with you on Michael Bay. He can sure shoot an action scene, but his movies all seem to lack that special ingredient that makes great movies great movies. He does tend to go for style over substance which usually ends up with visually exciting films that are hollow.

But, before I speak too soon, from all i've read so far THE ISLAND is gonna be the **** and will make him the most sought after director in Hollywood(case in point he may have already been given Transformers). Add the fact that Speilberg is producing The Island not Bruckheimer, look for this film to have a different flavor.

Perhaps I came on too strong?

I didn't notice the cafe. Forgive me for not posting this thread there. Perhaps the mods can move it for us.

These directers suck because of their skills relative to the acting part of the job. I find most of them to be amazing producers, but without good acting, their movies appear to me as hollow shells with candy covering. They woo us with their commercials, blowing our minds with their CGI and million dollar stunt men, all in the length of a short commmercial. Who do you guys think invented the words teaser or trailer? Did these things even exist before movies started being churned out by big companies? I wonder, I really do.

That's why I admire directers like Robert Rodriguez. Now that guy is an inventer. I consider him the 'McGuyver' of filmakers. Think about it. Who else can make a movie for $40 million (cheap movie these days) and make $50 million on it within the first two weeks of being in the box office. Also consider the fact that there are a lot of HUGE names in 'Sin City' so you can deduct that most of the $40 million budget went into paying the salaries of actors like Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, and Jessica Alba. That probably left him with only a few million to invest in the actual movie itself. I don't know any specifics, but I can only guess that he stretched every penney to it's very limit. Guys like Bruckheimer and Bay need no less than $100 million to turn out anything that is considered 'decent' by the mindless masses. Anyway, just my two cents.

That's some of the most efficient flamebait ever. Good job!

That said, the directors you have mentioned have all been involved in some mediocre projects, but each has also made great films.

Michael Bay's discontinuity editing and flashy action is a love-it-or-hate-it type of style, but it's catching on big time and I think it's great. Reminds me of the Soviet Montage. The chase scene in The Rock is just a blast, too, and his visual style is really captivating and original. All his movies are escapist entertainment and undeniably stupid, but they're at least fun. Bad Boys II was trash, however, but it still had its moments.

Sin City was cheap because it was shot against a greenscreen. That means you can shoot it in a few weeks, then the rest is post-production. So the actors spend very little time in the studio. It's fast, cheap film making. Considering that, it was very good. But judging a director based on use of budget is absurd. The acting was pretty terrible in it, too, by the way. Michael Madsen is a great actor, and he was horrible. Clive Owen was a disaster. The film was still fun, though.

Trailers have existed for decades. They're better now. So what? Directors don't even cut them and they're usually cut from outtakes. I don't see your point. You can say that Michael Bay can't direct actors (maybe true) or that George Lucas can't write dialogue (definitely true) but coming in with no knowledge of film history and making flat out stupid blanket statements is ridiculous. For my money, Robert Rodriguez is a genuine talent and I love how he is so multi-talented and resourceful, but Bay, Lucas, and Cameron are all better directors in that they are all able to do one thing superbly well.

RR has yet to impress me and I think he is severely overrated. Spy Kids? Spy Kids 2? Spy Freakin Kids 3? The Faculty? Hey, El Mariachi is a great success story but the guy hasn't exactly turned out anything phenomenal.

Teasers and Trailers have been out since foreva'. Long before these filmmakers were. And Piffer; honestly budget's and profit's? Come on; even White Chick's did that.
