Mic Sound Test

Flicks By Chics
I know that when I first bought my DVX my main concern was getting some good mics. I got a lot of good advise here but what seemed to be missing was something I could listen to. I have the Sennheiser Evolution G2 wireless Lav system and the Audio Tecknica AT4073a. I also have the Octava M012 on it's way. So here is a little audio/video for anyone who is starting out and would like to listen to these two systems, when I get my Octava I'll post a sample of that too.

Please excuse the video, I orginally was just going to grab the sound out of it so lighting and neatness wasn't a concern.

Hope this is of some help to those who are interested in either of these mics.

Nice! Yeah that lav sounds good... and I can't put my finger on it... but you definitely sound like a celebrity. I've got a few friends around the net that have amazing voices. It's ironic that I'm so into that stuff and yet my own voice is crap.

I hope if I come up with a story that requires female narration that you'll be available to do it.

For everybody who questions the G2 recommendations... JEEZ! Just LISTEN! It's a no-brainer!

ncje....just the lav that came in the box, I know that some think the boxed lav is crap but it'll work for me.

MattinSTL....thanks! A few years back (more like 20) I was a night time DJ for a local No. Calif radio station...I used to have a lot of fun putting on that low sexy voice....I never quite looked like what the boys hoped I looked like.

Agree with Matt, that G2 lav sounds great! Thanks for the sound test, Marlene.
Probably not pertinent to this test, but lav mics need to be controlled from hitting/rubbing on clothing/skin, and wind protection is also important (outdoors).
I've used furry windjammers for lav mics from Rycote with much success, although they aren't too inconspicuous of course.
Good stuff.

Thanks for the test Marlene -- hey isn't that a Todd Rundgren song? Google it if you never heard it.

Very useful. So hard to know what to get from just reading about things on the net. Much appreciated.

Sorry Marlene another question: What model G2 system are you using? I went over to EVS site and there are a number of model numbers. Also sorry but maybe a dumb question: Ill have two actors / people Ill need to connect a mic to each person, can you use two with the reciever you have and of course do you then require an additional body pack i.e. one body pack, one mic per person plus one camera mounted receiver.

G2 recievers are mono, for two microphones you need two sets of transmittters/recievers. There are also two channel recievers (also transmitters), but they seem to cost more than two cheapesh mono sets like G2.

It's the Evolution G2 and yes you would need 2 complete units for 2 people. You would run them off of different frequencies and mount 1 receiver to the camera and then maybe the other could be hung off the tripod somehow. The receiver has a body clip on it like the transmitter but if you clip it to yourself you'd be married to your camera.

The trick to getting good sound out of this unit is in setting it up properly, especially regarding the sensitivity. Guy Cochran has a really good video tutorial on his site here: http://dvestore.com/theatre/index.html
just scroll down and click on the Sennheiser G2 video tutorial.

Thanks John. I love this site and I take a lot from it, anytime I can give back even a little....I will.

No Problem.:) And Neumann is pronounced NOY Man.

I wouldn't mention it, but people make judgements in the Pro Audio world (and elsewhere) based on what you know. When you mispronounce stuff, it's not "tomato --tomahto,,,whatever ", as john thinks. People judge you as stupid.

I can tell it matters to you, even if it doesn't matter to john.

Best of luck with your gear.

Ha ha! Great test, I actually enjoyed watching it. Sorta felt like a really weird little short film with the dramatic lighting. Damn, what birds ARE those??! Ha ha!

I think ncje meant what model of G2 is it : 100 or 500? ( i could be wrong, is it 112 or 500?)... anyway, cheaper or more pricey version?

BTW, thought your sound was great, PLEASE add that oktava!

timapter....thanks and ....Opps...sorry...it's the 100. Just got my Oktava today and haven't even had a chance to even open the shipping box. I'm looking forward to checking it out this weekend. I'll post when done.

I think those birds are a type of dove but smaller...they're like really stupid, if they're walking around on the street you have to drive around them or run them over. And they will sometimes lay an egg without a nest to put it in....really very stupid birds but no worse than some people.
