Mic replacement for Rode NTG2

From what i can tell Rode NTG2 sound good BUT the build quality is atrocious. 2 mics felt apart on me. Ss any recommendations for decent sounding mic in Rode NTG2 (or a bit more) price range?

I can't explain your quality issues with the NTG2, I haven't owned one. But I can say the NTG3 is a very good mic which sounds good and has a very good build quality. Another benefit is that it ihas a much hotter output which eases the burden on your preamps. The price is still in the mid-range for a shotgun.

Of course you can spend much much more depending on your budget.

Hmm. I don't own an NTG2, but several friends do. And their mics are holding up fairly well after several years. IIRC, there were a bunch of counterfeit Rode mics around...sometimes sold via "Fulfilled by Amazon" dealers. No idea if you had a fake or bumped into a couple bad Rode mics. Bummer.

A camera friend recently bought a Rode NTG4 for under $400.

But if you're feeling reluctant to try Rode again, perhaps a Sennheiser MKE 600 or an Audio-Technica AT897? Those are both OK for the price, imo.

I actually don't believe you'll have too many people who think the NTG2 sounds particularly good (it's really just a NTG1 with a battery). And I too personally think it sounds pretty poor. But, there are some that do sound good and are good quality. The budget option would be the Audio Technica AT875r - new about $170, less if you get it used. I have two of them and use them all the time - fantastic mics, just love them! Generally, they have an excellent reputation. However, for those who look for more expensive mics, some claim the AT875r is a bit thin on the lower end, and of course it doesn't have a battery so it needs phantom power. A more expensive option, but still quite cheap is the Sennheiser MKE-600 for about $300 or so new. I also have this mic, and it's really very good quality; it is also notably richer in the lower end (to the point where some people think too much), has a battery, and it also has a very nifty low pass filter that can be very useful. A very nice mic indeed. Or if you want to stay with Rode, there is the NTG3 which has a very good reputation, but is a bit of a step up in price at $700 new; I have two friends who use it and are happy with it. I think you'll be very happy if you choose any of these, though I can only vouch for the AT875r and the Senn MKE-600 as far as build quality (and sound), because I have not handled the NTG3 in my own hands. Any of these mics can record something like a sea boar, for example - and give you much, much, much better wind protection than in this short, but amazing clip:

Another vote for the AT875r and I have five of them for general purpose use, I also do not like the NTG1/2 but have heard good reports about the NTG3. The sennheiser is OK but for the money I would go for the AT875r and match it with a rode PG2 grip and a WS6 softie.
