Mic recording problems DVX102B

After owning this DX102B cam for about a month I am disappointed with the performance of the inbuilt stereo microphone. I find I can record the higher frequency back ground sounds like traffic etc but when it comes to the human voice it is poor. I have the mic volume up one grad above neutral all the time and unless you are talking to the camera when holding it or a subject is talking less than 4ft away the result is hard to hear. My old VX2000 seems far more responsive without upping the sound level. I also noticed the peak meters in the view finder need to be just peeking the red if you are to get a reliable result. Am I the only one with this problem?? I asked the local tech man he said up the mic input to 60db but I read that that only effects the XLR inputs so that was a kiss off. I do have the shotgun mic but sometimes you want to record stereo, and dam it the cam should do it! Any suggestions?

Eagle eye, the DVX inbuilt microphone is average - but I dont know anyone who bought the cam for the inbuilt mic capabilities. It does pick up sound left and right of course as you say, but the signal is :S. A shotgun set to both left and right channels is a far better option.

Thanks for the conformation.

Thanks for the conformation.

Thanks for the confirmation. Isn't it funny how we the public can always fix a problem in a product by throwing more money at it. In my book Panasonic should have got it right in the first place. They dont put in the brocure that its a great camera that produces a great picture but by the way the sound is S... I think I have made an inappropriate purchase, silly me. Cheers.

I wonder what camera does a better job with the inbuilt microphone. The DVX is not great at that but it's not worse than other cameras in the same price range... If you want to record good sound, you need proper external microphones - there has to be a compromise between the mic sensitivity and the potential noise coming from the tape transport. That's why they've put XLRs on it. Also, most of the stereo effects are created/refined in post (a bit of skill and pacience and a good mono track can do wonders).

Should note that the soundboard the XLRs go through is probably the best in its class.....

Thanks for your replys.

Thanks for your replys.

I am no professional as no doubt you have guessed. I had the opportunity to get a pro video cam and thought I would buy it because I wanted the best picture I could get for the bucks. The audio I guess, I just took for granted. My main video work is family, holidays and the occasional wedding for friends or friends of friends. I post produce in Premiere 6.5 and write to DVD. Maybe I am just used to SONY (VX1000, VX2000 previously owned) although this DVX cam produced a better picture, audio has never been such an issue before thats all I am saying. Thanks for your replys 'ncje' & Engineer I think maybe I just expect too much, Cheers.

Who would buy a DVX with two longesh permanent shotguns sticking out from the to at 90 degree angle? Which would be useless most of the time anyhow.
