mic recommendations

I've heard that the XLR inputs on the HVX are a little finicky when it comes to selecting Mics. Anyone have experience with this, and/or any recommendations to share. Experiences with any variety of mic (lav, shotgun, whatever) would be helpful.

The inputs aren't finicky - but there are some wrong choice possibilities.

First, never use an on camera mic for any quality sound. The mic will hear the camera and the operator.

Second, do not change the input sensitivity to -60 - leave it at -50.

Third, use quality handheld, lavs, and boom mics depending on the situation. Remember to make sure phantom is off for dynamic mics. Don't attempt to adapt unbalanced consumer grade mics - always use balanced line mics. Listen to the sound quality when dialog is coming to the mic off axis vs straight on.

4 CH operation in tape mode is 32k not 48K - not recommended. 4 CH operation in P2 mode is 48K on all channels.

For feature grade work plug mics into a high quality mixer that is plugged into the camera using line level at the camera. Make sure the ALC is turned off.

Calibration wise, -12DB is the dot BELOW the first line, not the dot on the first line.

There's more, but that's some basics.

If you're loooking for a great all around shotgun mic- one that can be mounted on camera or on a fishpole, you should look at the Sanken Cs-1. Very flat frequency response and great off axis performance.

cost is about $750. I got mine and most of my audio gear from www.trewaudio.com
