Mic Question

I have a 100B, and I am currently working on a documentary. I have a regular shotgun (Audio Technica AT897), but I am wondering if this mic might be good for certain applications:

I am thinking this may be good on a boom pole to get interviews in crowded, noisy, uncontrolled environments. I have a lav, but for the stuff we are shooting for this, we cannot lav the people in crowds. How would this one compare to a regular shotgun, obviously with a wider pickup pattern.

Hi Andy, I would stick with your AT 897. An omnidirectional microphone is if anything going to make things worse in a crowded, noisy, uncontrolled environment. The only situation where an omni might be the answer is if several people in different positions are all talking at different times and for some reason you can't move the mic to pick them up. It won't sound great though, and since you say you're putting it on a boom it doesn't sound like this is the case for you.

The condensor would pick up everything and like Stephen said, compound your problems. Would going handheld violate your aesthetic? I mean letting your interview subjects hold the mic themselves?
