Mic or Line - Wireless Mic -

Shot with my new DVX today, with new Lectrosonics wx. I didn't (forgot to?) change the input switch from mic to line. What do you all do? When I was monitoring the audio through headphones the audio sounded a little compressed. Meters were averaging out right at the first red mark.

When I imported into FPC it sounded like the left and right channels were delayed a microsecond. Mic was in chan. 2, cam set to record LR chan. 2. Is this a goof, a mistake in FPC or was it an in camera delay between the two channels?

As far as the level from the mic goes, I'm fuzzy on what the proper setup would be - tx level, rx level and cam level. Never had so many options to deal with before. I know not to have either the tx or rx clipping, but how hot do you make the output of the rx and what level gives the best s.n ratio?

Long winded post, I know.

Thanks for your input.

the delay could be in settings, change the mic gain make sure the internal mic is off you might have to move the audio 2 frames in fcp

You've made an error which could have easily been avoided if you'd taken the time to monitor your audio as you shot.

Instead, for what ever reason...even though there is no good reason, you didn't listen in and paid the price that many inexperienced folks do on their early shoots.

Don't be shooting anything without an earpiece to hear your sound.

If you'd done that in the first place you wouldn't be in the jam you're in now.

As for line or mic audio...just make sure they match. Line mic is used more often when you're connected to a mult-box or someone else's sound source.

If it's your mics connected to your camera...set everything to mic level and continue shooting...with an earpiece or headsets!

Thanks everyone!

Lensmith, I was using headphones to monitor audio. Turns out the "delay" issue was with FCP - I imported the audio into my old standby - Premiere, and it sounded fine. I will take your advice in choosing the mic level setting on the camera.

Cool.

Be sure your audio setting on FCP is set to "audio follows video". If it's set on something else you will experience a delay similar to what you describe.
