Mic for indoor and outdoor use

I know that it is recommended to use separate mics for indoor and outdoor scenes. However, I have to ask if there is any mic that may be designed as an indoor mic but can also perform to a reasonable standard as an outdoor mic, or vice versa? The reason that I ask is that I begin to shoot a short film in the New Year and the recording of dialogue is required both indoors and outdoors. I don't have the money or time to save so I invest in two mics. Can anybody recommend a mic (less than $400) that might be able to do this for me?

it mainly depends on your locations. if its a carpeted room with fabric furniture a shotgun will do fine. but if its a room with lots of hard surfaces you're not going to get the best results with a shotgun. and if you're outside in a absolutely no wind environment, with no airplanes or background noise then a hypercardoid will do fine.

and $400 is going to be tough to cover what you need. if you're shooting outside you really do need a windjammer of some sorts. the rode blimp is a bargain at $300, or even the rycote S3xx kit at ~$325. and both of those will give you great wind protection.

or you could take that $400 and rent even better mics with wind protection

Assuming you already have all the necessary accessories (fish pole, shockmount, windscreening, cables, headphones), you can cover yourself for around $400. Look at the RODE NTG-2 and the Oktava MK012. That will give you a shotgun for exteriors and a hypercardioid for interiors. If you have absolutely no need for the battery power option on the shotgun, you can save even more by getting the NTG-1, which is the same mic as the NTG-2 but without a battery compartment (phantom only).

Rental may be a better option, though.

Used Oktava and used Rode ntg-1
who told you ,you cant do everything with 1 mic?
