Miami Vice 2006

Was I the only one thinking they were nuts for not setting "Collateral" in Des Moines? Come on, folks! It's totally an Iowa story.

If you build it, he will come.

LOL...

Would have been an interesting movie set there!!!

I thought lots of Collateral looked like cheap TV with that real "video" look to it and am always amazed when people say they liked the look. (like saying you like the look of "The Real World" on MTV or Paris Hilton's TV show). Whatever camera they filmed it on (and I know they used a variety including 35mm as well as HiDef) occasionally made it look like dogsh1t. That said I have seen hidef work well (Battlestar galactica TV show switched to HiDef seamlessly). Mann used to be an anamorphic filmmaker and I lament the switch to the other format. That said the Brad Pitt/David Fincher commercial uses the Viper at night very well so I don't know where the weak link is.

Just my two million yen.

I love Mann and his movie feel I get from his work...its a shame that this could not be done in a 80's period setting. I don't know if he likes period pieces but that would be great if he could do it this once for this film.

Mann is the MAN!!
You only need to see five seconds of any of his films and you know you're watching a Mann film. I love that. Its a sign of a true visualist and autuer.

I can't wait for Miami Vice.

Does this count as a remake because Mann exec produced the Miami Vice tv show? I think he can pull it off.

I don't think it matters who did it originally... its been done, now its being done again...its a remake. Or really, the new more popular term "re-imagining".

Also, Gong Li, stars in it. IMO, She is one of the finest actresses working today, but for obvious reasons is more of an icon in the Far East. Don't know if she's speaking in English for this, but I'm glad Mann cast her.

I read a clip from the Post about budget overruns, the recent shooting, and Mann fighting the studio. Oddly enough, "Heat" had some of the same problems ... If you can mix Mann's Miami vibe, with some of the realism of "traffik" (the t.v series) this should be the dogs bollocks.

Cheers.

Yes, but let's not forget "The Keep."

Bob Keen's creature was the only interesting thing about it.

Check out LA takedown - the Heat script starring someone called scott planck. It's Heat but done as a TV flick....and yes, it's actually directed by Mann - don't see that one making onto his directors box set somehow. Yuk.

I'm excited about this flick, mainly because it's Mann and "Heat" is one of the standouts of the genre. Also, the actors, locations/cultures - Miami, Cuba etc...
And the Viper footage looks amazing. A very specific vibe (although the low-rez isn't a great judge), that I dig.

Damn, I'd love to shoot a movie in Miami. Maybe Bacardi will sponsor me.

Cheers.

Looks interesting, but still don't see why it had to be called Miami Vice other than to cash in on the tv show's success and namesake. It ain't Miami Vice without the 80s cheese factor and lots of neon... oh yeah and shoes with no socks.

and not some MTV music videomaker at the helm.

Actually, Mann was credited with making popular the frenetic MTV - esque cutting style that is popularized today :)

Although I wasn't as fond of Collateral as I was of Heat (one of my favorite films of all time) - I think that it definitely had it's strongpoints and stood on it's own as a compelling dramatic LA crime story.

I'm looking forward to this

EDIT: Read the rest of the thread - looks like somebody already made my comment... didn't want to seem like some assholish monday morning quarterback... ok edit complete.

EDIT2: Holy **** - the trailer looks SO BADASS! I can't wait for this beast!!

Anyone remember the ORIGINAL commercials for the premiere of the TV show? With "In the Air Tonight" playing? This looked like that. Should have used the same song.
