Miami Vice 2006

Agree about the time-consuming and silly romance between Crockett and Isabella. Completely disagree about the "believability" factor, however. If nothing else, the world in Miami Vice feels much more alive and unpredictable, dangerous. Tables are turned in an instant. Violence and death are everywhere. Imminent. Like that child perched atop that wall in that So. American shithole, even the most seeminly "innocent" figures possess a malevolent regard. I like Collateral, but it's a screenwright job, mostly.

Just saw this movie. I liked it.

I thought the grainy night shots were kinda distracting. The gun battles were really tight though. Just hearing the bullets ripping through the sheet metal gave me goosebumps. And there were plenty of surprises which is always a plus.

I don't know how i feel about having two shower sex scenes. Kinda got boring the second time through. It would have been far more interesting if crock and gong did it on the speed boat going 100mph on the way to cuba.

It was gritty, thats the point of the "grainy" shots that offend people so much. People talk about it as if it were taboo. "what was up with all the shots". Its raw, its tough, its vulgar, thats the point of the shooting style. Loved it.

I liked that way Collateral looked, especially the night exteriors. I would be willing to bet that the look for Miami Vice will be very cool. Lots of Miami at night, I'm sure. I would be willing to bet he bumps up the saturation on this one (as compared to Collateral).

He must've turned up the gain (and therefore grain). The opening scenes have so much grain in the night sky, I found it hard to watch the movie, due to lack of clarity. Whoever made the decision to continually zoom in and out, come in and out of focus, made a bad choice, beacause while making it seem rushed and impromtu, to me it just made it feel poorly done and- well, rushed. Colin ferrel (spelling?) in my opinion is a terrible actor. Another thing I thought poor about the movie was the random sex and shower sex scenes, I actually laughed when the second one appeared. The asian lady's accent made me laugh more than take her seriously.

Casting Gong Li was the biggest mistake Mann made. She was absolutely awful for this part. There was zero chemistry between her and Farrell when we're supposed to believe (SPOILERS) that they'd both risk it all for each other? Ugh. She didn't appear comfortable in any of their intimate scenes and her "looks to convey emotion" were completely inscrutable. A huge misstep by Mann and the primary reason why this film goes in the "liked it, didn't love it" bin. Put Grace Park or Ziyi Zhang or some other hot YOUNG Asian chick in the role, but there was no way I believed Colin Farrell falls for the older broad with the weird features.

My date and I were laughing at the supposedly serious moments between them. And at the horrible dialogue too. She leaned over at one point and said, "Did George Lucas write this scene?"

Stylish. Fun. Exciting. Suspenseful. And a total bust on the romance front. Cut this sucker down to 2 hrs and lose the 15 minutes of Gong/Farrell.

After seeing it I know exactly why it hasn't been bringing in the box. This isn't something many people are recommending to their friends, because it's not particularly entertaining.

Yes grace park is cool. She's come a long way from her lackluster acting in the BSG mini-series. But she's a bit too young for that part. And Ziyi Zhang has become the go-to asian actress. It's getting old.

Maybe the hottie from Mission Impossible 3. She was good.

yeah, I just named a couple Asian actresses off the top of my head. Really any hottie who could speak engrish properly.

I have to say, that this one took a couple viewings for me. First off, I'm a massive Mann fan. And I dug Miami Vice as a kid, so when I saw the poster art, I got pretty excited. Add to it that my favorite band EVER has two songs in the movie (including that ever important closing song, which is such a big deal with Mann's flicks). This was the movie I was most stoked to see this summer, though I have to say that Supmerman Returns was what really blew me away. Anyway, everything just clicked for me in this movie (as usual with Mann) except for...the character development. So much of the relationship between Crockett and Tubbs was implied. I really wasn't sure what to think at first. I mean, with Heat, the Insider and Collateral, there seemed to be so much more to the characters revealed in the first half-hour. After seeing the movie a second time, it became clear to me what I'd missed the first time around. First of all, this is such a long story; adding more background to the characters would have skimped on so much. There's simply no time for lengthy introductions, and that's exactly how it should be. We're supposed to be thrown into their world with a quickness. That's how fast things move in the world of the characters. It's jarring to anyone who's used to traditional film storytelling, but for this movie, it just works. It also seemed like this movie was Mann taking a bit of a walk on the "Summer Blockbuster" side. As much as he can without giving up his personal touches, that is. That's my take on it.

Some very cool shots and some good scenes (as mentioned in the thread). Definitely some intense action and violence, but Foxx and Farrell's realtionship comes off as hollow:

Like Trudy would say, "I ain't playin'"

Gimme a break. Overall, a mediocre flick.

Feeling a little cheated here. Watching the behind-the-scenes, in particular the blocking for an indoor scene with windows, and it's revealed that they used FILM for that scene. I was so pissed because you're told movies are shot in HD and you assume that going in so that when you see an amazing shot you didn't know could be shot on HD you go, "Oh cool, you really can shoot that shot on HD." But now I'm stuck wondering, "well, maybe they brought in a film camera for those one or two scenes that they knew would be too tricky to shoot on HD", and who knows what those scenes were? Very disappointed.

feeling cheated too. just bought it on DVD only to check out the commentaries. my biggest problem with the film is Gong Li. totally miscasted. i could live with the chic that played Tubbs' woman (Trudy) but Gong Li is just not attractive enough for Crockett to take that kind of risk and "fall" in love with her. if they HAD to use an Asian woman for that part its a ton of them they couldve went with. Lucy Lui is way hotter and speaks better english for example.

other than that it was a decent film, but felt hollow and i wouldnt recommend it to friends as mentioned above.
