Miami Dolphins unveil plan to host fans in stadium amid coronavirus pandemic

It actually doesn't seem that bad to me. I mean, it could use a little more refinement and it would be nice if they had even more people to cut to. And it definitely reminds us that everyone is isolated and alone right now. But I thought it adds some of that tension that the viewer responds to on a social level.

Danes over at Mydtjylland decided to have a drive-in soccer match. The intrepid photog took snapshots of the parking lot. The screens just have to be imagined.

PS. Bundesliga is piping in fake fan noise over the PA. That actually sounds OK.

And, after a goal, Bayern Munich now play Jacques Offenbach's "Gallop Infernal" from "Orphée aux enfers", the first and the greatest cancan ever written.

The Russian Premier League (RPL, soccer) has resumed its play. FC Rostov had six players test positive for COVID and most of the senior players (and coaches) had to be quarantined. They appealed for their match against FC Sochi to be postponed or canceled. But Sochi's owner Boris Rotengerg (an old buddy of Putin's) refused and said, "We followed the precautions and we're ready to go. If they're sick, it's because they didn't obey the rules". So, FC Rostov had no choice but to field a bunch of boys from their youth squads. The final score was the all time RPL record of 10:1. But the 17-YO kid in Rostov's goal also established a new RPL record by making 15 saves. Yup, without him, it could have been worse.

That doesn't bode well, does it?

The official Russian stats on Covid's lethality are (various estimates) 10-15 times understated but that's for the general populace. Soccer players will get the top treatment and, of course, they also fall into the "age and health" group, where the recovery rates are very high.

Still, one can have a reasonable profile and somehow "die from Vladvid ... I meant, Covid" anyway.

(sort of Russian politics related)

According to a Russian daily SovSport, 35 RPL players tested positively for Covid since the restart on the 17th. The responses from the league varied - from quarantining the whole senior team to ... eh, nothing.

And, yes, SovSport means the Soviet Sport, the same name it was given in 1924. I was a subscriber (OK, technically, my dad was).

Many in the US don't know what pro/rel is. The US pro leagues have a fixed number of teams and the worst thing that can happen to the worst team is that they won't get to pick first in the next year's draft.

Not so in global soccer. In most leagues, the worst teams get the taste of "rel", aka relegation, a demotion to a lower league. One day, you're playing against Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool and, the next, you're going to the likes of Bolton, Bristol or Barnsley.

On the other hand, winning in the lower leagues means a promotion to the big show and is celebrated like a mini Superbowl.

Leeds United just won the second tier of the English soccer known as the Championship and, after a 16 year trip across the small towns UK, are going back up to the Premiership. Back in the 1970's, Leeds was one of top clubs in the world but, by 2004, a series of horrible player acquisitions and coaching choices sent the club into a spiral of defeats. Leagues changed, owners changed and, a decade and a half later, they've returned to the spotlight under a manager who doesn't even speak English.

The jubilation in Leeds started three days ago when their promotion was guaranteed and is still ongoing. They had a huge party outside of their stadium. And, to finally get to the point of this post, no one was wearing a mask.

Two points: Everyone in the UK hates Leeds United; Only about 15% of people wear masks (I do because I'm not a twat).

So the UK is populated by 85% twats? I thought things were bad over here

I'd put the figure closer to 25% twats ie those people who view it through the tainted gaze of their political bias. The rest have just been lied to, misled or are confused or lazy. Plus, the government really wanted us all to get COVID to develop herd immunity. Bonkers.

I worked with some Brits for a while, and their English is (as we all know) quite a bit different from American. I was reading a review of a game from an English magazine, and it said "this is another really naff level in this cack game." So I asked him "hey, what does naff mean?" And he said "it means it's crap." And I said "oh, okay, well, what does cack mean?" And he says "that also means it's crap." I asked "Why do you have so many words for crap?" And he said "Because there are a lot of crap things in England." I laughed until it hurt.

I guess it’s kinda the same reason they say Eskimo’s have 50 words for snow...

No, that's entirely different. If you've been to the artic you'd know why the Innuits have 50 different words for snow. And, if you'd been to England you'd know why we have so many words for s*%te.

... Everyone in the UK hates Leeds United ...
Only everyone outside of Leeds.

It's like most fans in Germany outside of Munich hate Bayern. Of course, they hate Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig even more. Euro football is very tribal. In spirit, it's closer to the US NCAA conferences. If you're a Wisconsin fan, you hate Ohio State and Michigan. But not as much as you hate Minnesota. Those guys are pants. Daft wankers one and all.

Some US high-up economic official had the bright idea early on that we should all get coronavirus on purpose at the same time. Like a chickenpox party. Then we could shut down the economy for 2 weeks and be done with it. Turned out to be a bad idea because of the WW2-level death toll. Oh, and the fact that they're not sure herd immunity will work.

I have friends that hunt and they'll tell you that disease and things like this happen every now and again in animal species that get too large and "out of control" in areas. No one wants to hear it, and I'm not saying I want to see anyone get sick or die, but mother nature is trying to cull the human herd. It took over 200,000 years for the human population to reach 1 billion(in 1804). Then only an additional 200 years to reach SEVEN BILLION and we currently have around 7.5 billion humans on planet Earth. Projections have us reaching eight billion in as little as the next four years.

You're talking about people, not animals. Maybe millions or billions or us must die, but we don't give up that easily. What happened to no man left behind? Or all for one and one for all?

Also, people think that our population growth will level out due to declining birthrates (and some countries are already shrinking):

"The 2019 forecast from the United Nation’s Population Division shows that world population growth peaked at 2.1% per year in 1962, has since dropped to 1.0%, and could drop even further to 0.1% by 2100, a growth rate not seen since pre-industrial revolution days.[3]

Based on this, the UN Population Division expects world population, currently (2020) at 7.8 billion, to level out at or soon after the end of the 21st Century at 10.9 billion (the median line),[4][5] assuming a continuing decrease in the global average fertility rate from 2.5 births per woman during the 2015–2020 period to 1.9 in 2095–2100, according to the medium-variant projection."
