Re: MIA Grabs

These are great. Nice job stabilizing the camera. A little CC and Contrast adjustment and these will rock (IMHO).

Re: MIA Grabs

Thanks guys, the weather did help that day. There was no wind, the water was very calm. The footage did come out a LITTLE shacky though... I will need to do some research to see how I can stabalize it better for next time.

Re: MIA Grabs

That footage will make for some great establishing shots. (Assuming you are able to re-shoot it w/o shaking.

Re: MIA Grabs

Just curious, but do you stabilize the same when filming from an aircraft as you do if you just generally suck at hand held work on terra firma? My hand helds look like I have DT's, so I am looking at stabilizing solutions besides OIS. I had thought about getting some aerial shots downstate after hurricane Jean ripped through, but dont know how I could have ended up with anything other than motion blur. I would have been in a biplane (or whatever those planes are called that have the floaty things for landing on water).

Re: MIA Grabs

Those “floaty things” are floats – hence you would be in a float plane. Aerial photography is challenging on many levels and often depends on what kind of aircraft your shooting from. Helicopters are generally the best but they often vibrate the most depending on what kind of rotor system. The problem with most planes is the space – there isn’t any. Having said that, if you can position yourself in a way that a small sandbag supports the camera then the plane becomes the tripod, the pilot is the photographer, and you can get some very smooth shots. Oddly enough, one of the more difficult things to deal with are the reflections in the windows.

I do a lot of aerial shooting and as much as I like the DVX100a DV doesn’t do the subject justice, it doesn’t have enough resolution. :-/

Re: MIA Grabs

Moe- Those are beautiful shots!

ChuckS- Thanks for the tips (and clarification of "floaty things")

Re: MIA Grabs

Thank you guys for all the good feedback :)
Thartley, the issue I was having was with the helicopter vibrating. The one I was on was not so bad because this helicopter is specifically designed for filming and broadcasting. For example it has 4 blades instead of two which makes it vibrate less and makes for a less bumpy ride. I will post some footage later so you see what kind of vibration I’m talking about. The pilot told me that there is a stabilizing hardware that we can use to make it look very stable. I’m not really sure how its going to work though. I will try it and let you guys know how it worked out.

Re: MIA Grabs

Chucks, I agree with with what u said regarding the lack of resolution. Man I wish this camera was HD. As far as the reflection from the windows, I did not have that problem because there was, well….. no Window! I was sitting with my legs hanging out of the helicopter. (I was strapped of course) ;)

LOL, next time I'll post some grabs of the REAL LIFE girls you see in that game too :p

Re: MIA Grabs

My palms are already sweaty just looking at your last grab...
Actually its not so bad. You get used to the height after a while, especially when your flying above water for the most part. all you have to do is HIT THE WATER lol. but then you have the sharks ;D

Re: MIA Grabs

Great grabs.

Although, I think my favorite one is with your feet in the shot.

There is something about that compisition that is more compelling.
